Any way to find out WX & conditions in Cozumel area?
Looks like Wilma is smack dead center over the island...

5.  Mexicopat is on Isla Mujeres which is north of Cancun.
It is very close to Cozumel though. :( Here's a thread on Mexicopat:

18. No, she's on Isla Mujeres, nearer Cancun,
which is now expected to get the brunt of the storm.
Lots of kibbitzing going on here:

Under the Wilma thread, but it's slow as so many people are on it.

3. Someone from a cozumel board got a call
here is her post:

Just got off the phone with Christi. Exhaustion is setting in as they haven't slept any more than a couple of minutes at a time in over 24 hours. This time, I could clearly hear the wind quite loudly through the phone as we talked. Christi said she was having trouble hearing me over the noise. In looking at the satellite photos, they appear to be in the very worst of the storm right now - with sustained 150 mph winds and gusts to 185 mph.

They currently have water coming into the house through the windowsill tracks and under the doors - this is NOT due to rising water in the street (which is still draining well), but instead to the relentless wind literally blowing it into every crevice. They're busy using every towel in the house to soak it up, but it seems to be a losing battle. They've moved food and all the bedding to the 2nd floor in case of a storm surge, but that's just for emergency preparation's sake - they're well inland and there's no real expectation of that occurring. However, better to be safe than sorry!

It looks like they'll be getting the eye very soon, so they'll have a couple of hours of relief - but then it all starts over again, only this time from the other direction! ::::.

(snip)

So they're all safe for now, if somewhat moist , exhausted and frazzled. The island is getting seriously hammered. This is a dead-on hit with a storm that makes Gilbert and Emily look like nothing.

The eye is passing now, so it should be partly cloudy, and then it will all start over again.

6. I think Tulum will be OK.
Edited on Fri Oct-21-05 01:57 PM by Lisa0825
It is passing farther north of Tulum, so they won't get the worst of it.

edited to add: they will still get hurricane force winds, but they are outside of the eyewall and on the south western edge of the storm.

10. Well, the resort is a little north of Tulum
So, it just depends how far north the major hit is. The resort was closed since July after Emily and just re-opened this month.

But this one is moving slow, so that's not good.

I am going to Cozumel Nov 12.

15. My guess is that all COM is down now.
The ham bands are quiet down that way. Probably will stay quiet until after the blow when operators can get some temporary antennae back up and some fire in the wire.

24. The US Hurricane Watch Net (HNW) is on 14.325 MHz (20-meters).
I usually tune through 10 and 20 meters in the morning and 40 meters in the afternoon, depending on band conditions.

And not to be picky or the spelling police, but it's Senor Frog's. Somehow Senior Frog's doesn't sound quite as fun. And yes, I'm somewhat to embarrassed to admit that I know exactly where that joint is in Cancun.

Edited to add that I'm thinking of Mexicopat and wishing her and all the residents the best. Praying they will all survive the storm. Their homes too.

actually laughing my ass of at the thought of "Senior Frogs." It's given me an idea to start a chain in Florida and cruise ships. It will only be open until 9 pm. And dinner will be served promptly at 5 pm.

PS - hope the person with the cut is alright!

22. the deep water off shore pretty much negates any "storm surge"...
it's a HUGE difference between the u.s. coastal areas and mexico...
ALSO- many of the buildings are concrete, and very sturdy.

28. Check this site for hurricane news
http://www.hurricanecity.com

They normally stay on top of all points of a hurricane. Board is located on the right side of the page. There are also links to radiocasts from various locations along the paths of hurricanes.

31. I'm hoping the
deep water of the Yucatan Channel prevents the storm surge from pulverizing the island. Been there a few times and thought the reef system was the most lush I'd ever seen in the Caribbean. The drift diving there is incredible. My world will be sadder if Juan de Tecca's Dive House bites the dust. I'm hoping for the best outcome. You know I am.

33. I hope the reefs will be OK
I have heard that hurricanes don't affect anything more than 10 feet down. I have my first diving trip planned in November. Of course, I am more worried about the friends I have made there than anything, but it would be a big loss if those reefs were gone. Some of the best in the world.

Last update I found:

. "4:00p.m. update from Cozumel"
In response to message #12

Alex just called - his Cingular cell was working - no land line -
about 10 inchs in the street luckly none in the house. He said all the neighbors roofs that were metal(other than concrete) are gone.
The damage 1/2 way thru this storm he said was worse than all of Emily.
The eye has just passed and winds are picking up again at 140 with salt water rain really hammering them.
Their attitudes are great and realize they have hours more to get thru this.

15. "RE: 4:00p.m. update from Cozumel"
In response to message #14

I just talked to my wife who is in our house in Cozumel. I'm amazed that our Verizon phones work so well. Bet that will change as soon as the eye passes. She went outside while the eye is overhead and things are fairly calm. The street is full (10-15 inches) and looks like a river running by. The side of the house is completely covered with bits of leaves and grass, as if someone spray-painted them onto the house. Over all, we're pleased that we've had no inside flooding. I reminded her that half is yet to come.
We're very concerned for the locals who have lesser built homes and pray that no one is seriously injured. This is definitely worse than Emily.
