"Faking it is seriously funny business for Stephen Colbert.
He has played with Jon Stewart in the loopy fake news paradise of "The Daily Show," where his smug, slightly bewildered correspondent specialized in unctuous reports on "This Week in God" and other topics. Tonight, Colbert steps out on his own in the fake punditry zone.
Ready or not, America, here comes "The Colbert Report," a spin-off snugly situated in the spot following Stewart and "The Daily Show," at 11:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday on Comedy Central starting tonight.
Imagine a know-it-all, cable news pundit composite, made up of, say, equal opinionated parts of Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity and Joe Scarborough, with perhaps a dash of folksy Aaron Brown's metaphorical rhetoric for sanctimonious seasoning.
That's the fat satirical target for nightly fake pundit whoopee on "The Colbert Show."
"It's about bluster and personality," says Colbert (pronounced cole-BEAR), noting the different tone of his new show in comparison to the sly news lampoon of Stewart's "Daily Show."
