Mary Landrieu back on the floor of the Senate speaking - C-span 2

She's pissed. They need help.

Thread from last night:

"Bush's FEMA is still screwing New Orleans:
Edited on Wed Oct-05-05 10:26 PM by joemurphy

Mary Landrieu on C-Span has set it all out. FEMA is sitting on $41 Million and not allocating it. Meanwhile New Orleans is dying. Nagin's laying off workers. Schools can't open. 71,000 small business loan requests - 7 have been approved. Universities are closed. The City has no money and can't make payroll.

It's horrible. If any of you can listen to this you'd be like me -- amazed. We're blowing the recovery too. Tax breaks don't help when you have no income, no businesses, no nothing.

This is another scandal brewing I think.

Even the faith-based institutions in New Orleans have nothing.

"It makes me frightened...that we don't understand the role of the federal government at a time like this." -- Mary Landrieu"

She is going to talk all day tomorrow she says - that was last night.

She didn't literally say "filibuster".

She did say she was talking to try to get Congress and the WH to act before they go on another break for a couple of weeks. They need the help now not in weeks.

It sounded similar to a filibuster. The Senate closed for the night but she said she would be back talking tomorrow also.

I hope she does try to keep them from going out of session, embarrass them and force them to act.

3. Real clear that Senator Landrieu deeply cares about her state.
Edited on Thu Oct-06-05 09:18 AM by DemsUnited
Have issues with some of the things she's done and the way she's voted, but have absolutely no doubt that she'll go to the mat as many times as it takes for Louisiana.

4. I was listening to the Finance Comm hearing and
Grassley opened it by saying that he was pissed. A small group of Senators are blocking his and Baucus' package of aid to the Gulf region. Grassley stated that he had carried enough water for this PResident and he is really upset that the President is blocking the aid to Gulf residents.

Must not be enough give-aways to Halliburton in it.

22. I'd love to know which specific Senators and who within the Administration
is behind this. Their names need to be in the public and dragged through the mud.

Good to see ya, Tay Tay.:hi:

money to build them in Louisiana.

She knows things are tough in Iraq but they are tough on the gulf coast too.

8. Goddamn. She's pissed off. She just slammed *'s faith based relief effort
She said the Catholic Church in NOLA is laying off 1,000s of employees and that the Catholic church needs help. It can't give help.

She spoke about how NOLA was built 100 miles up the MS river on the highest fround around and how tax cuts will not help the people of NOLA

9. I'm watching too, boy she's pissed.
Paraphrasing talking about marshland...
(I like this rant...)

"Don't insult the people of my city by saying NO was built right on the ocean...there were miles and miles of marshland between NO and the gulf that protected the city from flooding for years...the people who built NO built it on the highest ground they could find...Jackson Square didn't flood! And the statue of Jesus is still there!"

wow I really like Mary, I just wonder how she feels about the bankruptcy bill? It would be great if it could be repealed.

having made mistakes herself. Wondered if she thought that was one of her mistakes.

Not the first time the airbus A320 aircraft landing gear didn't work properly was the 16th time according to the FAA...we cannot afford to have understaffed safety inspections...

21. I think she will be on and off today. If someone else comes down and
wants to talk, she will let them but she is going to keep doing this.

I hope she won't let the Senate go into recess. Raise hell and get some attention. This is ridiculous. Where is Sen. Vitter? Lott would be more likely to help her then that jackass.

I'll try to keep an eye on it and post what she does.

I remember her filibustering/threatening to filibuster last year to get the administration and Congress to increase benefits for the NG and reserves (something to that effect).

She is great when she gets pissed.

Landrieu chastises Senate for focusing on defense, not Katrina

WASHINGTON -- Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu chastised the Senate on Thursday for working to pass defense legislation while refusing to deal with the immediate needs of victims of Hurricane Katrina.

"Our war is right here at home," Landrieu, a Democrat, said in an emotional speech on the Senate floor. "Our war is right here in the Gulf Coast."

Landrieu said two-thirds of the $63 billion that Congress already has provided in hurricane relief has not been spent by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, even though cities are having to lay off workers and tens of thousands of evacuees are still in shelters and lack health care.

Landrieu said Congress should redirect $14.7 billion of the money already appropriated to provide health care for evacuees, pay the salaries of public employees, and provide relief and help to public schools, hospitals and small businesses.

Good for her, she is fighting tooth and nail for her constituents instead of doing what the rest of them fight for, their corporate campaign donors.

29. Go Mary, Go!!!!
I grew up in New Orleans, and her cousins lived three doors down from me and the Landrieu kids were over there all the time. She was (and obviously still is) about 6-7 years older than me. I had a crush on her then. Still do somewhat (especially on days like this). :)

She ain't leaving 'til the wee hours.

"When we get back, if the bill gets voted down, at least I'll know I did what I could...the first nation we need to be building is our own!"

"I wish FEMA was the way it used to be, but it's not today, and it won't be next week, and it won't be next month...we can't wait for FEMA to organize itself..."

Take the $$$ from FEMA and send it to the parishes..."we have to find a billion dollars to keep these entities (City of NO) operating."

"No matter what congress does you're not going to break our spirit..."
