C-Span now
Edited on Wed Oct-08-03 08:28 AM by Girlfriday
There is a great guest right now: Economic Professor Lester Thurow who wrote a book "Fortunes Favor the Bold". He is blasting Shrub. Says this is not a jobless recovery - it is a job losing recovery. Advocating removing shrub in '04. Very interesting!

1. Refreshing
To hear a man who really understands REAL economics.

2. Thurow is a genius.
I wish he was on network programs instead of just PBS and C-Span. But what difference does it make if so many of the voters are too dissinterested or stupid to understand his message, however simply it is explained?

3. Simply is...
when you can't buy a pack of smokes or keep putting bill collectors on hold....Economics is only a simple issue when everyone feels a similar pain, like the Depression or the late 70's inflation. Right now it's hitting different people different way...jobs for some, pensions for others, health care for others and so on. Put all those pieces together with a catchy slogan and you're gonna do good. Witness California

Sorry...I'm still pissed.

4. Know Why I Like Thurow?
It's very simple. He is one of the few econ guys who actually has developed his hypotheses and theories of how the economy works by analyzing the data and determining causal links.

The vast preponderance of the econ community (of which i'm a part) spend their time parsing data in order to build cases to support their preconceived concepts of how the economy works.

Thurow, and a few others, actually did the work first, then figured out the theoretical constructs to explain it in more general terms. That's why when he writes or speaks, it makes sense. It's the TRUTH!
The Professor

5. Maybe, But I am Not Convinced He Understands
How devastating the free trade issue has become for the middle class.

I have now been unemployed for 38 months. I hold degrees in Electrical Engineering and Business Administration. I am also a FAA certified commercial pilot and am a honorably discharged veteran.

I have not heard from a single employer or recruiter in over 18 months.

I say that overseas outsourcing, L-1 and H-1b visas, and unlimited support for free trade is killing the middle class.

I have yet to see any economist address the issue from the ground level. All I hear is lip service and the need to retrain.

Retrain for what. And if I did retrain, what guarantee would there be that the next field is not going to be outsourced soon as well.

I think economists need to wake up and examine what is happening on the ground instead of looking at ivory tower business issues.

I didn't tell you yesterday, no time, but I really liked your post on the thread that was running yesterday about the economy. Great!
