We need to be careful how we address the Bennett comment
We need to keep on message regarding racism and quit wandering over to the abortion issue. If we do that, we will play right into their hands.
It is purely about racism and NOT about abortion.
The multiple threads about aborting Republicans, etc, will lead to the inevitable argument that if you are aborting criminals...then you might be aborting world leaders and heroes. Let's not go there folks. It's a dead-end argument. Keep on topic--it is ONLY about racism.

1. I agree
Some caller on Randi today was trying to make it about abortion.

2. Of course it was a racist remark
Edited on Fri Sep-30-05 08:20 PM by ayeshahaqqiqa
my only comment about the abortion part of it has been "But I thought the GOP were right to life. Does this remark mean that they only think whites have the right to live?" Brings it back to racism, but also points out their own hypocrisy without saying anything about my view on abortion, which is not germane to the argument.

Edited to change a word, thanks to a kindly poster who corrected me!

4. Here's the money quote, from Howard, mkay
"One of the more egregious aspects of Bennett's recent statement is that it buys into and perpetuates the notion that race is a proxy for and a predictor of crime and violence. Race is not. Poverty and lack of opportunity are..."

Rest of DNC & Dean statement:

10. And the thing is
that abortions, in general, I would think lower the crime rate. It just makes sense. Unwanted children are often unwanted because there is not enough money to care for them. Poverty leads to crime.

I am not advocating abortion as birth control; I am a Dem who is very uncomfortable with abortion. BUT you know what? If I would have gotten pregnant after age 45 I would have gotten one. I think I can be both pro life and pro choice. And sometimes the choices are hard.

7. Although one aspect of the insanity of Bennett's frothing
Edited on Fri Sep-30-05 08:04 PM by omega minimo
is the notion that "you" (editorial) could choose to "abort" anyone.

"If you abort every ____ baby in the country"-- AS IF. What sort of perverted point of view is that? Who would even conceive (pun intended) of that concept, even hypothetically?

Another example of trivializing and externalizing the issue, the reality and the experience, of abortion into a conversational gimmick for clueless people who view it only from the OUTSIDE, only as a mechanism of CONTROL.

The caller was talking about people who were never born, who aren't paying into Social Security. Bennett was talking about aborting babies for social control. Maybe the discussion should be "about" EUGENICS.

16. Bennett is saying 'blacks are criminals'.
Abortion has little to do with it, IMO. After reading the entire quote it's clear how racist it is. From what someone said earlier, Bay Buchanan agreed with the racist comment. :eyes:
