Edited on Sat Sep-24-05 12:21 PM by GreenPartyVoter

Looking at the cameras around 15th & C, it looks like everyone is right at that intersection, maybe 10-20K people.

Are the rest still stuck at tube stations and similar, I wonder?

the people of the world's own "gallowglass", greet the people as "Comrades!". It wll have been music, of course, to the ears of the neocons. McCarthy would have had a fit with his leg up!
And then wearing a scarf round his neck, which could have been Yasser Arafat's headwear!

War Protests Get Started Near White House

Associated Press
Saturday, September 24, 2005; 12:27 PM

Tens of thousands of people are streaming onto the ellipse near the White House to protest the war in Iraq.

The crowd is diverse and includes both the young and the old. Many are carrying signs. Some of them read "Bush Lies, Who Dies?" Others simply say "Liars."

After holding a morning rally, the crowd is expected to march to the front of the White House and down to the Justice Department. They'll then circle back to the Washington Monument for a concert and rally.

War supporters are expected to line much of the march route.

The ANSWER Coalition and United for Peace and Justice are the main antiwar organizers. They say the theme is "Bring the troops home." The groups claim as many as 100,000 people will take part in today's event. D.C. police say they expect little trouble during the demonstration.

They said the 2K were there HOURS before the thing even started.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Opponents of the war in Iraq rallied by the thousands Saturday to demand the return of U.S. troops, staging a day of protest, song and remembrance of the dead in marches through Washington and other cities in the U.S. and Europe.

More than 2,000 people gathered on the Ellipse hours before the showcase demonstration past the White House, the first wave of what organizers said would be the largest Washington rally since the war began.

The speaker now up just announced on CSPAN that "the streets are FULL..."

98. They said "more than two thousand"..........
technically, they're correct. Ethically they're lying, bush-loving, propaganda spewing scum. Why not, "more than 50" or "more than 100"? :grr: Fucking Corporate Media, they're second on the list of "Scum of the Earth", just below the bush administration but before used car salesmen and insurance salesmen. :grr:
I knew this would happen, they've got all their reporters on the Gulf Coast covering the Hurricane (which indeed deserves coverage) but they're totally ignoring the SECOND biggest story of the day! One trick ponies, the Corporate Media.

200. they also said "before the rally started" for 2000
their 2000 count was prefaced with "before the rally"---the people who are making an issue with this obviously need to re-read the offending text

CNN did nothing wrong. They merely said well before the rally there were at least 2000 people already there

178. BTW, that's just what was on the Ellipse.
There was another crowd, not quite as large, to the lower right of this picture, as well as marchers pretty much around the frame of the picture. The road you can see is covered by marchers forming up.

Add to that more sparse crowds all around, like over by the music stage (which I imagine drew in even more people later in the day when the bands started up.)

53. BBC news on DC rally:
Thousands of anti-war protesters are marching in Washington to demand the withdrawal of US troops from Iraq.

Organisers said they were expecting 100,000 to turn out for the rally, march and concert near the White House and Washington Monument.

Opinion polls show a majority in the US believe the war in Iraq is going badly and US troops should be brought home.

Supporters of President Bush's policy in Iraq also gathered in Washington for a counter protest.

It was a sight to behold in Montpelier, Vermont this morning. Well over 1,000 people....that`s right, over 1,000 people.... showed up to march in solidarity against the criminals in the White House.

Peace babies, peace veterans, peace dogs, peace teenagers, peace musicians, peace oldsters. Our rally was about three city blocks long. We marched to the State House, where there were over 1,900 white flags stuck in the grass. Our local tv station was there. It was fantastic.

I am so proud of Vermont.

hard to count, the crowd was strung out over several blocks - at least one thousand people at the rally at the federal courthouse.

76. Nothing about this rally...
...is going to inspire average, non-partisan Americans to join the anti-war cause.

Sorry to be killjoy, and I know virtually no one on DU is going to agree with my opinion here, but this is another International ANSWER rally that is probably a net negative to the anti-Iraq war cause.

Too many topics addressed aside from the Iraq war, too much anti-Israel sentiment, too many pro-Palestinian speakers, too many pro-Fidel Castro speakers, too much radicalism on display, too much America is the cause of all evil in the world wailing, etc...

This is just not going to appeal to average Americans. I'm watching a speaker now railing about the US in the Philippines. I mean, come on - what has this got to do with the war in Iraq? The US troop presence in the Philippines is marginal and for the most part assists the PI government with crushing Islamists Abu-Sayaf terrorists and wiping out the remants of the communist rebels. Americans are just not going to be against that, and quite frankly, neither are the majority of Filipino's outside college campuses.

So long as International ANSWER is the primary force behind these things, these protests will achieve next to nothing.

Imajika

79. You do know the history of our occupation in the Philippines, though,
right?

Three are parallels to Iraq.

But I agree. I wish more people at the very least stated their side cause, then tied it into Iraq somehow and spoke further on Iraq from there on out.

80. AGREE 100%
Totally. This march/protest has been, to put it the most polite way, diffused in its focus and fury.

And frankly, the march organizers are to blame, including Cindy Sheehan. Once she, the symbol of anti-IRAQ War, began referring to Palestine, it was Katy, bar the door.
And Good-night, Louise.

105. As long as ANSWER is the answer to the question:
Where the fuck is the Democratic Party?, then we will have to put up with them at the protest scenes.

Too many within the dem party are cowards, fools, and appeasers. Cindy Sheehan said that America will follow an anti-Iraq invasion politician, we're just waiting for one to stand up. The last one to stand up got media assassinated by OUR OWN PARTY.

The people are ready to take on this administration. The "People's Party" is not.

175. I agree about ANSWER being a pain, but
this is the Catch-22 of progressive activism.

I marched in Los Angeles today and I heard the same dreary Far Lefty and adenoidal speechifying that will persuade nobody.

But the cockamamy speeches at these demonstrations do not get through to the general public anyway.

The dilemma is that only hyper-motivated goofballs from fringe politics have the time and "organizers" available to do the grunt work to make a mass demonstration happen. Only when things get as desperate as they were just before the start of the war, and now that the war is an unquestionable disaster, can the ANSWER types hope to draw a big crowd. So we fall together in an uneasy alliance of convenience for the day.

The benefits of a big march are, in my opinion, fundamentally different from the effort to change minds. The rally gives the marginally motivated amongst us an opportunity to see each other. This is not a small matter -- when the Main Stream Media is in the hip pocket of the Bush/neocon gang, it gets lonely. Participating in real mass action gives you a real boost of energy and confidence.

We have to tolerate and appreciate the tedious toil that sets up this sort of demonstration -- or form our own organizational structure to make a more mainstream-friendly agenda for then next wave of demonstrations.

I hope that the agenda will shift to election and vote count integrity next year -- with tens of thousands of people directly confronting the private and public apologists for unverifiable election returns.

The successful demos today can contribute to building an activist mentality among the marginally motivated to take back democracy.

That is the real war in America now.

131. I just returned home from the march
I live in Silver Spring, a suburb of DC. Had to work for a few hours this morning so didn't get started until 10:45. I took the Metro to Metro Center (Red Line from Silver Spring. They were running long trains and my car was more than half full, mostly marchers). Transfered to the Blue line at Metro Center. The first train into the station was PACKED, but I squeezed on.

Got off at Federal Triangle and walked toward the Ellipse, but took a detour to the Mall. I wanted to see the crosses and tents. Walked up to the base of the Washington Monument - because it's on a slight hill I could see the crowd - the Ellipse was packed and there was a large crowd across the street on the Mall.

I started walking to 15th and Constitution where I figured the march would start. As I snaked my way to the intersection the crowd got very dense. It was already past the 12:30 announced time of the march but we just stood there as the crowd grew bigger and antsy. It was a long wait because as far as I could tell the march didn't get started until 1:30 when we finally felt some movement (we couldn't see much because we were so packed).

Finally we were off. I kept working my way toward the front so I could take pictures of the marchers as they passed me at the end.

We marched up 15th street with the Dept of Commerce Bldg on the right. We were accompanied by some great drummers and they kept us chanting. to my left was a bare-breasted woman with a sign the said "Breasts, not Bombs" Nearby was a woman walking on stilts that were at least six feet tall. The marchers were of all ages, from an elderly woman in a wheelchair excitedly snapping pictures, older couples holding hands, middle-agers, lots of 20s, 30s, and 40 year olds, college age, teenagers and plenty of kids in strollers.

Eventually it started sprinkling, then stopped, then it started to rain lightly. It soon stopped and everything was okay again.

The march did not progress very quickly. The march was completely stopped evey few minutes because an organized group wanted to do some rehearsed chants. I had mixed feelings because the march started late and was not making very god time. We finally made it to the front of the White House (the march wasn't even a quarter done and yet it took us an hour just to get this far - I'm sure there were still marchers who hadn't even started yet). The march really bogged down here because a lot of marchers had never seen the White House and wanted to take pictures. Also, almost everyone wanted to yell something even if the President was not home (is he ever?). I scooted past the White House and from then on the march quieted down and moved faster.

When I got a few blocks from the Metro Center Metro station I decided to head for home.

The last big march I participated in was in January 1972 here in Washington, DC, to protest Nixon's Inauguration. That march was much better organized, but it was bitterly cold that day. Less than three years after that march Nixon left Washington in disgrace. I'm hoping for a repeat!

I will have pictures to post soon.

Salt Lake City had a gathering, then march, then rally. I am not good at estimating the numbers, but there were AT LEAST several hundred. I want to say 1000 people, but I don't want to overestimate!

During the rally, many of us stood on the sidewalks with our signs waving to drivers. Hundreds of cars were driving by honking, waving the peace sign and yelling in solidarity with us.

There was only 1 protest warrior, yes, only 1.

Will post pictures when I upload them later.

154. The first hour and a half (approx.) was very focused.
That's when UFPJ was handling their part of the protest. That is when Jesse Jackson, Cindy Sheehan, Cynthia McKinney spoke. The Raging Grannies sang, the crowd was enormous.

ANSWER started their speakers at around 1:00. The crowd was already getting antsy at that time and leaving to go to the march. ANSWER somehow cannot seem to learn to focus.

As for hate-radio, they have a field day no matter what happens. You know and I know that they'll make shit up to scream about.

Of course, there is no connection whatsoever between US policy in Iraq, US policy in the Occupied Territories, US policy in Cuba, US treatment of blacks at home. Right? All separate issues; nothing to do with each other.

Yes, the ANSWER folk may provide some fodder for the Limbaugh types, but who cares what Pigboy says?

All this bitching about ANSWER reminds me of DLC types complaining about DUers.

168. Report from Tucson, AZ
Also posted in the Arizona forum...

Really really fantastic to see my fellow Tucsonans exercising their lungs and legs in protest today! Although I haven't heard an "official" count as yet, some organizers told me afterward that an estimated 400 people participated. I heard 600 at one time. We'll see, I suppose, but wow, looked like an impressive lot for Tucson anyway.

Great signs at the 10am rally in Catalina park this morning. I was only able to get a few photos since I was busy helping to paint signs for those who came without. I'll get my film developed soon and share them if they come out (crappy throwaway camera, you never know with those things).

We marched from the park at 4th Ave & 2nd and along Speedway to picket at the military recruitment offices between Campbell and Tucson Blvd. While this is not my first march, it was the first during which the police abandoned the "anyone marching in the street will be arrested" promise originally given and cleared the right lane for us to move through. Even if this was done more for their benefit than ours - I heard someone suggest it would just get us out of the way quicker, and the narrow sidewalks just weren't doing it, which is likely true - the officers we saw were extremely helpful, friendly and courteous. Moving along the street seemed to increase our numbers, with a number of people joining us along the way, at least it looked like it from where I was.

I was one of the many pallbearers helping to carry the cardboard coffins along the way, my faith in humanity restored after hearing constant honkings of support from passing motorists. Only a few misguided souls offered obscene gestures or the occasional pro-Bush shout; all in all, heaps of support out there for ending the * regime and stopping this senseless war. Once we reached the recruitment centers and parked ourselves along the street and in the parking lots, someone started playing Dylan's "The Times They Are A-Changin." Still more honks and thumbs-up in support from people driving by. One brainiac revved up his engine (did he know he's helping to add to the fuel crisis??) and yelled "Bush Rules!", to which a fellow protester at my side yelled back something to the effect of, "No kidding! We're not supposed to have a king!" I wished my rabble-rousin' mum could've been with me today, though she certainly was in spirit and I phoned her with all the news afterward. Thanks, too, to Cactus Kathy from KXCI for giving me a lift back to my car - I'm a lobster from having forgotten my sunscreen.

Great to see everyone peacefully assembling under that scorching sun! Let's keep it up, folks. Hold our leaders - regardless of party, since there are also Dem's who aren't representing the We the People properly either - accountable.

Power to the People!

just got in about an hour ago. It was a fantastic day, definitely over a quarter miilion people there. It was packed, people from all over the country represented. Everyone was so nice to each other. Even the cops were nice! We went into the WH reception center and the security gurards were wishing us well and told us they hoped we could make a difference. Wish we could have stayed for the rest but at least we got there for the march. Exhausted. Will post some pics tomorrow.

Also, I saw NO overhead shots of the crowd, and when it was near the end, they showed big empty spaces, where previously there were hundreds of thousands of people. They rarely panned the crowd when the people were speaking. I heard a caller on Washington Journal yesterday say that the media should take overhead shots of the crowd because she thought the media would play the numbers game. This is bullshit, strictly bullshit! Lyin' basturds!!

http://www.cleveland.com/world/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/news/1127640743199561.xml&coll=2

Sunday, September 25, 2005
Washington - ...

The front bore a photo of her grandson, 22-year-old Marine Lance Cpl. Daniel Nathan Deyarmin Jr., who was killed in Iraq on Aug. 1. The back had a picture of President Bush, labeled "International Terrorist."

Davis attended the march in matching T-shirts with her daughter and granddaughter, Edie and Erica Deyarmin, the deceased soldier's mother and sister...

"I don't want my kids, or anyone else's kids, out in harm's way for an unnecessary war," said Kim Baragry, 45, of Cuyahoga Falls, who has two children in the Army...

Walter Nicholes, 81, of Cleveland Heights, a retired public relations executive who served in World War II, compared the current conflict to the Vietnam War, and said both were unjustified.

198. I marched in DC
And I'm looking for a photo of me that was taken by a probable DUer. I was marching with some of my friends from college and also JohnKleeb and Zenfuego. Someone in a very plain DU teeshirt and camo pants took a picture of me and Zenfuego as we marched. I'm not even sure if it was a digital camera, but I would really love to get a copy of that picture. I was wearing a light blue shirt that had "Unpop that collar you tool" painted in black. Zenfuego was wearing a white tee with something anti-war written on it.

So..... If anyone knows either where this picture is or who might have taken it I would be really grateful. I'm hoping the DU shirt wasn't just a fluke and whoever took this picture really is a member.

Thanks for this thread by the way, I'm avoiding work by going through all these photos and they are great stuff!

202. CNN Reports: "Hundreds not thousands join pro-Iraq war rally"
Looks like attendance for the PRO-WAR RALLY (that's what they called it!) was disappointing. Reading some of the things these people had to say, it's obvious that they're not listening to us, just hearing what they're prepared to hear. How many times does it have to be said that you can support the troops and still oppose the war?

222. An "I Just Got Home" *KicK* !!!!!!!!!
Thanks for starting this thread GPV !

It was soooooo amazing! I helped carry the DU "Here in Spirit" poster, with all the DUers names who couldn't attend the March in person, but we made sure they MARCHED...LOL... and can't remember the young lady's user name who made it! I'm bookmarking this thread with hopes it'll show up when I have time to search all the great links!

I had hoped someone took a picture of the "spirit" poster from DU, as many, many fellow marchers took a picture of it also! It was inspiring to them!

As of this morning in DC, Peace March count was well over 100,000, with average estimates about 200-300,000. Depending on the counting source.

Counter-protest rally on the Mall yesterday: 400. Period. Priceless!

There were also several photos taken of the DU group before the march started. Hope that makes the Home Page! Skinner would be proud!

Because this is a DU Group, you'll need to have a star (be a donating member of DU) to access the following links. And even then, their availability will be subject to how long the individual members keep the photos up on their private hosting accounts. However, I'm going to try to set up a more permanent home for the best of these photos on the Photo Group's web site (hosted outside of DU). So for posterity, if the original links don't work, try finding the shots at http://photogroup.smugmug.com/.
