Katrina question: Where the F##K is wall-mart?
Anybody that drives on a interstate highway has seen how many trucks they have. With a highly touted distribution system, wall-mart (the country's largest retailer) is uniquely qualified to help stop the human crisis unfolding in front of us. What about all the food & misc. supply's that must already be in their system for their damaged stores on the gulf coast?

3. Would be nice. But don't expect it. I worry about their employees
I heard on NPR that they were offering each $1000, not a lot for many employees who have very little, probably no insurance, and now no job.

4. I'm pretty sure they tried to hand out food & clothes
until a mob rushed the store and looted the place.

5. They wrote a check, ok?
Geeeez, one million dollars doesn't buy as much cover as it used to. Of course, one million dollars to them is like you or me handing a quarter to the guy who with a will work for food sign...

8. Wal-Mart is trying to help!
Edited on Thu Sep-01-05 05:35 PM by SlipperySlope
Please, can we hold our normal distaste of Wal-Mart in check for a few days?

They have sent ten truckloads of water
They have sent 20,000 batteries
They have sent 20,000 medical kits

They are putting a nationwide system in place at all their stores so survivors and families can post messages to each other.

They are preparing emergency supplies for the Houston Astrodome

They donated $1 Million to the salvation army
They donated $1 Million to the Red Cross

It appears that Wal-Mart is doing more than friggin FEMA, so cut them some slack, ok?

11. Oh Great! True objectivity!
Maybe I should ask chimp about how his war is going. I'm sure he'll be just as truthful.

13. Not the same Ernesto; how about cutting them slack?
I know the chimp lies, but I've got no reason not to believe this Wal-Mart page.

You don't like them, fine. But at least they appear to be doing something useful, and putting their facilities at the disposal of other people who are trying to do something useful.

Wal-Mart is a Southern company, and you can hate their practices, but they aren't filled with heartless bastards from top to bottom.

You can accuse them of not doing enough, but at least they are doing something. That's more than a lot of other companies or people in our government can say.

But a tragedy is not the time to grandstand about what wonderful citizens they are. BTW, does karl rove work for them?

16. Wal-Mart made their billions off the virtual slave labor of millions....
...of Chinese. That have also treated their female employees unfairly in terms of wages.

IMHO, the owners of the Wal-Mart have absolutely no feelings toward their employees, and I'm far from the only person to hold that opinion.

One more point...the idea behind a message board is that everyone is welcome to voice their opinions on any subject. Take that advice for what it's worth.

12. ??? Without any coordinated relief leadership, NO seems on it's own.
I understand you may have meant your post as sarcasm, but it makes a point. How can the private sector, and their resources, help?...If there was effective national leadership right now, it could happen.

17. They were supposed to be such a big asset to the N.O. community
when they opened up that big new store where St. Thomas projects were. You know, the one the looters ransacked and cleaned out the gun section. :puke:
