Family at Camp Casey w/ daughter in LA needs your help! (Please Read!)
Edited on Tue Aug-30-05 02:34 PM by brainshrub
Buddy Spell (aka Dylan Garcia) is one of Cindy Sheehan's lawyers. He and his wife are here at Camp Casey helping to make this action as smooth as possible.

When they left Louisiana they left their 7-year old daughter, Sarah, with a friend in Washington Parish. (In LA, counties are called "Parishes")

Due to the hurricane, they have lost all contact with their friend and they fear the worst. The Spells are frantic for solid information about the state of Washington Parrish or their daughter.

If you have solid information about what is going on in Washington Parrish, please call 612-578-0130. This is the cell-phone number of Alex, a close friend of the Spells. I have full permission from the family, mods and Admins to post this personal information.

The reason I have to post a telephone number is because internet access out of Camp Casey is spotty at best. Due to the nature of this emergency, he can't spend time monitoring his PM box and emails.

Please keep this thread kicked. I will post in this thread when we have the information we need.

Do not call the number unless you have solid, first hand information about the state of Washinton Parrish or Sarah Spell.

ON EDIT: If you have a blog, feel free to post the above information on your site.

Missing persons rescue database

A reader posts that there is a database being developed for people who are missing and may need to be rescued from New Orleans. Call 225-925-6626 to give officials their names. They may also have information about people already rescued. We attempted to check this number and were unable to get through (busy signal).

Post a question on the blog. I don't see Washington Parrish listed but go to the nearest one.
http://www.nola.com/weblogs/nola/ (Scroll down just a little)

What about (my neighborhood)?

We're receiving hundreds of requests like this from evacuees, people with families and others concerned about their particular suburb or neighborhood or parish.

We urge everyone with questions about their area of concern to post in the appropriate local forum below, a bulletin board where others in your area can see your questions and share information. The community itself is the best set of eyes to report what's going on in local areas.

As we begin getting information about your local area in, you'll be able to see it directly on these forums, and later in specific weblogs for your geographical area. Post your questions, share what you know, and keep loggin in to NOLA for the latest information.

49. What is the friend's name--the person Sarah was left with? And can you
be more specific than Washington Parish? Area? Town? Street? I'm scanning Google news sites reading rescue stories. Here's one account (all safe):

http://www.nola.com/newslogs/breakingtp/index.ssf?/mtlogs/nola_Times-Picayune/archives/2005_08.html

Place: Slidell, LA (the twinspan bridge over Lake Pontchartrain, Oak Harbor and Eden Isles)

Names: (rescuing, or rescued) Mike and Melinda Parks, Ann Nash, Jim and Odette Nash, Jim Elorriaga ("E.L." - New Orleans blues musician).

------

I would guess that Sarah and their friend are in a shelter, and I imagine communications are a real mess, with so many displaced people. But I'm scanning rescue stories just in case.

Zero compassion. Just blame anyone who is hurting in any form.

75. I'm trying to figure out where the heck Pine, LA, may be. I think
it might be in the vicinity of Ben Creek Wildlife Refuge/Bogalusa? I'm just thinking Pine might mean there are pine trees, forest = wildlife? Just guessing. Can't find it on any maps. Anybody got a clue?

From what I can gather Washington Parish would have been pretty directly in the storm's path. It's just north of New Orleans and Lake Pontchartrain (with Tammany Parish in between), with the Pearl River running down the eastern border of Washington Parish (parallel with Hwy 21) near Boglusa (Franklinton is some miles, maybe 50 mi. to the west--don't have any scale on the map I found on Wash. Parish). The eye of the storm passed over the mouth of the Pearl River which I presume drains into the Gulf near New Orleans.

-------

Here's a blog that was started for Tammany Parish where some of these locations are being discussed, and people are trying to find people there. They mentioned that Hwy 25 (which runs through Franklinton) was quite blockaded with downed trees (but I don't know which part of Hwy 25--not familiar enough with the places they are mentioning).

http://www.nola.com/forums/sttamtownhall/

------

Brainshrub, if you can come up with the name of the friend that Sarah was left with, or a family name, I'll put them on that blog. If I don't hear from you, I'll put Sarah's name there anyway. (But local people are more likely to know the friend/family she's with--they might not recognize her name at all, if she doesn't visit there often.)

82. When I talked to the lady at the TV station in Baton Rouge,
she said that FEMA officials were getting NO communication in and out of Washington Parish. There are trees down on all the roads, and Washington Parish is one of the "black holes"...meaning that there are numerous communities that are isolated, without communication and without transport in or out. It's just that most of what you see on TV is New Orleans...but, the other communities out there have not reported in to anyone, and no one can get in. The best info I could get was from a fly-over of Covington and Mandeville, which are near Franklinton and Pine. Said there was tremendous damage from trees, but only a little flooding in some neighborhoods. Did not see people on the roofs or waving them down from the yards, roads, etc. She did say to perhaps expect bad things out of that parish because they are almost due north of New Orleans and took almost the same amount of wind and rain. Surely, officials and FEMA are working to get into these "black hole" communities...or, are all the resources being focused on N.O. and Biloxi/Gulfport? My niece and her hubby are trying to reach the Sheriff Dept and the man with whom Sarah is staying by phone, but they can't get thru....they will keep trying.

93. Brainshrub...just heard on WBRZ, Baton Rouge
From a man who spent the day in Covington, which is just south of Franklinton/Pine....said THE ROADS ARE NOW OPEN TO COVINGTON...he did not say which particular roads....said alot of damage in Covington, but had heard of NO deaths in that area. Still no communication by land line or cell into or out of that area, he said.

Anything new? Did they find out anything at all about Sarah? Many DUers are wondering if Buddy/Annie have had any word? Will you post if they find out she is OK?

thanks

3783. seeking: William Seal/Sarah Spell in Franklinton

by EllaGoes, 8/30/05 19:24 ET

I am making the request for her parents, Annie and Doyle P. "Buddy" Spell who are stranded out of contact.

Missing person:SARAH SPELL
124 East 14th Avenue, COVINGTON, LA 70433
985-264-7752

Sarah is 7 years old. 4 feet tall40 pounds, long brown hair, brown eyes, adult teeth

She is from Covington, but she was evacuated on Sunday to the home of:

William C. Seal
The Thomas Community
55226 Highway 424Franklinton, LA
985-848-5902, 985-848-0407

It is presumed that she was at the home of William C. Seal at the time of the storm.

If you have any news, please call:

CHUCK TOMLINSON
3331 15th Ave. S
Minneapolis, MN 55407
612-600-5820 (cell)612-624-0313 (work)612-578-0130 (cell)
[email protected]
[email protected]

---------

I will see if I can find out where evac centers would be for Covington or Franklinton. I saw in Post #3770 at the nola.com blog that the Pearl River evac center at Creekside Jr. High was open and undamaged (there was concern about it). (--not sure what town; is Pearl River a town as well as a river--or is it a general regional designation?)

If those seeking Sarah Spell are ahead of me on this, please tell me! No sense duplicating effort--I'll follow your direction as to blogging or internet research needed. Just post here. I'll keep checking back.

117. Somewhat good news.
A cousin of mine called me and said that one of her sisters drove in to Franklinton from Amite. She confirms that the road from Baton Rouge to Franklinton is now open and that everyone in Franklinton is OK, although there is a lot of storm damage to homes and a lot of trees down.

She didn't know anything about Pine, though, but it is so close to Franklinton I hope the situation will be the same.

I have called Alex and left a message.

128. GOOD NEWS FROM PINE on the wwwltv.com blog
FRANKLINTON - PINE - WASHINGTON PARISH INFO

Today my wife drove from Franklinton to Macomb, MS in order to phone me here in Kansas. She could not phone me on her Cingular phone, but her sister-in-law's cellphone (Verizon I think) worked.

She reported downed trees, damaged roofs, missing roofs on a few buildings, but didn't have any reports of flooding or injury. Franklinton could be considered to be ok and safe, with the exception of homes damaged by falling trees. Our home in Pine couldn't be reached until all trees were cleared from roadways, and the locals worked quickly and efficiently to clear them. Lake Choctaw, where we live, was described as a war zone, with lots of downed trees. Our house is fine, but are told no electricity for a month or longer.

Later today she could text message me with her Cingular phone. Later she discovered she could call long distance landlines, but not 515 exchange (franklinton) cell phones.

She leaving tonight to drive up to Kansas and meet me here.

I hope these bits and pieces of info are of some help to people with family in Washington Parish.

Sam Alfano

he has posted his cell number, see this link-->

164. Hoping for an update, and some info on hotels...
I talked to my sister last night. She is a regional reservations manager for Hilton. They have been having numerous conference call meetings with the N.O. hotels in the Hilton brands. She says all their hotels have been letting as many people in as they can. People are sleeping in the halls and lobbies. They are also sending 18 wheelers full of non-perishables from several regions to restock supplies at the Hiltons. I hope the other hotel chains are doing similar things. She also said that the hotel managers were in the process of trying to identify everyone staying there so they could set up an 800 number for people to call to try to help locate missing loved ones. So far there have been no deaths or injuries at any of the Hilton brand hotels.

214. Still no news about Sarah.
We are in Austin, TX right now. They are still looking for their daughter. The caravan will be in Houston tomorrow before going to New Orleans.

Buddy read your posts earlier today from the Crawford Peace House. He thanks you for your help & prayers.

I may or may not be with the Spells tomorrow, but the moment they find Sarah, I will let you know.

In the meantime, read the original post and spread the news far and wide. The more people who know who we are looking for, the better.
