"He volunteered"
a freeper phone caller to Guy James Show just said. I think I have a counter argument for them. If you volunteer to help a guy move by driving a moving van, and then find out the guy lied to you, and the stuff inside is really stolen goods, would you feel you still had to drive the van because you "volunteered"??????

The point is that our military volunteered for LEGITIMATE duty, not for lies.

3. I get this argument from my buddy alot..............
Edited on Sat Aug-13-05 06:37 PM by CrownPrinceBandar
I throw the legitimate duty thing back at him and he says it doesn't matter, that he signed up to be a soldier and soldiers go off to war. When I bring up that Bush lied to get us into the war, he always replies: "All politicians lie, Clinton (whom he liked) lied". Its frustrating.

8. Next time tell him to put up or shut up
by the way, the oath of enlistment has nothing on it about ilegal wars or ilegal orders... but it has lots to say about enemies both foreign and domestic, hate to say it, your pal is the domestic kind

I am done with these people... and after talking to a sailor today, I can tell you the troops are as well. I have gotten the hints but not as blunt as today

5. An awful lot of young people volunteered all right
but for the National Guard, not to be full time soldiers. Maybe they had jobs and wanted to help out when the states have problems, maybe they have some other story, it doesn't matter. The point is, they are supposed to be Iowa, Ohio, New Hampshire, or wherever National Guardsmen. That means they are supposed to be there for natural disasters, riots, and other state and local emergencies.

6. The troops did not volunteer for this crap in Iraq....
They volunteered to defend the Constitution of the US - not the face of George W Bush and the Republican Party...

Says a lot about a country where the innocent and naive die and are met with "we don't care!"

12. Good counter argument...
The military is being used and abused. Simple as that.

They said WMDs, got an agreement to go in, then didn't find WMDs. Proof comes out that there was never any WMDs in the first place, the government knew it, and lied about it.

What part of "IT'S ALL A LIE" don't these people get?

So we're there, the soldiers and marines aren't being supplied correctly, they're coming home fucked up, and no one can say when it'll stop. "Support the troops" means "support this administration" and the administration neglects the troops.

17. No he did not
no he did not... trust me I talked to him... offered to send Care Packages, but they don't have the training. They are sailors for gods sakes, not soldiers, and yes the training IS different

13. But Casey didn't volunteer for Iraq at all!
He volunteered in May of 2000, during that long nightmare of peace and prosperity under America's last duly elected president, when ** was still messing up Texas.

Sure there are always risks when volunteering to serve, but I'm sick of hearing people throw, "but he volunteered for this" when referring to Casey as though he enlisted after **'s invasion of Iraq. :argh:

18. Casey reenlisted two months before he was killed ....
... at least according to stories I've read.

That doesn't change the fact that the military is being abused and people are being KILLED for a pack of LIES - a FRAUD.

14. Good point.
There's only so long our military will put up with responding to false "wolf" cries. As they see firsthand the falseness of the war's premise, we'll see soldiers returning disillusioned and angry. And all the "rah-rah" crap they come home to will only exacerbate those feelings.

20. Volunteering doesn't give the President carte blanche
Just because you volunteer doesn't mean that you volunteer to have a boot camp sargent shoot you for target practice. Just because you volunteer doesn't mean that you volunteer to be thrown out of an airplane without a parachute. Just because you volunteer doesn't mean you volunteer to go into a firefight without ammunition.

Those are extreme examples. But they prove that there are limits to what a soldier volunteers for. You don't volunteer to be sent into combat without proper armor. You don't volunteer to go into combat, but then are handed a role as a policeman and traffic cop in downtown Baghdad, standing in the open like a sitting duck. You don't volunteer to fight in a war that is an illegal war, one whose justification was entirely misrepresented to the American people, to our elected representatives in the Congress, and to the world.

21. He wanted to be an assistant to a Chaplain,
not on the front lines where he was assigned.

A lot of people being killed in this war were truck drivers, cooks, engineers, etc. Many of the young men and women who have died did not sign up to be warriors.

22. Bush's lies and deception violated the faith and trust of our troops
Bush put the soldiers in harms' way recklessly and dishonestly in a risky gamble. Invading Iraq was not payback for 9/11 and did not make us safer. Bush and Co should be impeached.
