Pastor charged with secretly taping girls, women (NC)

GREENVILLE (AP) — A Baptist pastor has been accused of sexual exploitation and peeping after investigators found videotapes showing at least 10 women and girls at his church undressing and using the bathroom, a Pitt County sheriff's investigator said Wednesday.

Leon E. Harris, 54, is charged with six felony counts of secretly peeping and four felony counts of sexual exploitation of a minor. He was released Wednesday after posting bond of $30,000, said Lee Moore, Pitt County chief of investigations.

As a condition of his release, Harris cannot go on the premises of Rose Hill Free Will Baptist Church or have any contact with the people he allegedly videotaped, a court record stated.

"This is just the tip of the iceberg," Moore said. "We still have a lot more evidence to go through."

Dola B High, 93, died Sunday, July 18, 1999, at North Mississippi Medical Center. She was a member of Shiloh CME Church. She was an honor graduate of Okolona High School. She completed junior college and received her teaching license. She taught at the Oak Grove School in Union County. She later continued her education at Rust College in Holly Springs and received a B.A. degree in 1953. She retired from the Houston School District in 1971 after 41 years in the education profession.
Services were Saturday, July 24, at Shiloh CME Church with the Rev. Leon Harris officiating. Burial was in Hill crest Cemetery. Beastly Funeral Home of Tupelo was in charge of arrangements.

The investigation began when a woman complained in Surf City that a man was videotaping her on the beach with a camera attached to a metal detector. Investigators say they discovered several videotapes and DVDs in Harris' possession with explicit images of women.

He was charged in that incident with possession of a photographic image taken secretly.

After Pitt County detectives viewed five of the videos, they matched the images with areas inside Harris' church and began interviewing some of women seen, Moore said.

Investigators now say some of those images were taken inside his own church. The Pitt County Sheriff's Department arrested Leon Harris, pastor of Rose Hill Free Will Baptist Church today. You may recall Surf City Police arrested him two weeks ago for taking pictures of women on the beach. Authorities also confiscated tapes from his truck then. In fact, those video tapes landed him in jail again today. Delano Wilson, Head Deacon of the church says it's sad that this is happening. The Pitt County Sheriff's Department tells Nine On Your Side they've identified 10 victims. Deacon Wilson confirms six of the victims are adults, four are children. And police say all the video was taken inside the church. Harris turned himself into police this morning. He got out on a $30,000 bond this afternoon. Police say they could file more charges. Harris was relieved from his duties at the church about a week ago. The deacon says any more decisions will be left up to the congregation.
