What are we gonna do about the rape and torture going on?
What are we, as DUers, going to do about this?

1. What would you suggest we do?
The politicians on both sides of the aisle are remaining silent about this, and most Americans, thanks to the MSM don't have any idea
how bad things really are.

At this point in time we can only hope that the judge throws out the
governments excuse and orders the release of all documents and photos
that show what else went on in the name of "Freedom and Democracy".

If not then the American people and the world will never know the truth.

2. Someone is bound to write a tell-all at some point, don't you think?
Of course, the RWers will completely blow it off as another liberal smear.

3. If we're smart then we confirm it to the best of out abilities
with as much evidence as humanly possible.

The reasons being this:

1. No court would be willing to throw the charges out the door

2. No sensible skepticism could be concluded to the matter.

3. Innocent before proven guilty

Then we press charges using proper legal channels...and hope that the highest court in the land remembers the interest of justice over party politics.

5. Hire more police and investigators.
Collect evidence. Make sure that they're really 'rape' and 'torture', as opposed to things that are abuse, but not rape, and humiliation, but not torture. I.e., check in with reality.

Then punish those that commit such acts or formulate policy mandating such acts.

Or we can run around shouting 'rape! torture!', hoping to find out that we haven't redefined 'torture' downwards a bit much in most cases, and that the alleged rapes are actually did happen.

6. what are we gonna do about the illegal occupation in general?
Edited on Tue Jul-26-05 11:04 AM by anarch
what are we gonna do about the use of banned weapons on civilian populations? (Fallujah especially, but most likely other places even the best informed Americans don't hear about)

what are we gonna do about the use of civilians as "human shields" (of which there is some considerable anecdotal evidence) or the failure of the occupiers to provide basic services to the civilians they have "liberated", as required under the Geneva conventions? Or the targeting of hospitals, for chrissakes?

what are we gonna do about bringing the war criminals to justice?

These kinds of things, including torture and rape, are why aggression is considered (in international law) to be the primary war crime...it leads to all of these other horrors

and what are we gonna do? It is our duty to do whatever we can to end this mess. So keep writing your representatives (if you have any voting representation), keep putting pressure on those who have direct responsibility for the situation...and press for full withdrawal, handover to UN, whatever it is going to take to get U.S. troops out of Iraq. That seems the clear first step of many, including holding our criminal leaders responsible for what they've done. If we, the American people, don't do this, then we are complicit in these crimes.
