1. Acquittal makes these things go away faster

When they are convicted then we have to hear all about the appeals, the sentencing hearings, and it drags on longer. When they are acquitted the story goes away faster because there is less to talk about.

I seem to recall that the media was ga-ga over sharks around the time prior to 9/11.

Shark attacks are stories of limited interest. After all, most of us don't live near them. But the stories are helpful in creating a low level sense of over-all dread in the populace.

That damn "Jaws" movie made it all too real.
