Police open fire on Iraq crowd
Edited on Tue Jun-28-05 04:54 AM by LynnTheDem
SAMAWA, Iraq (Reuters) - Police opened fire on a crowd of demonstrators in the southern Iraqi city of Samawa on Tuesday wounding seven protesters, including one man who was shot in the head, witnesses and hospital staff said.

Nearly 2,000 unemployed Iraqis were demonstrating in central Samawa because they had not been given jobs in the police in Samawa, 270 km (170 miles) south of Baghdad.

Protesters threw stones and police opened fire, first with warning shots and then shots aimed into the crowd, Reuters reporter Hamid Fadhil said from the scene.

Foreign troops, apparently from British or Australian units which operate in the area of southern Iraq, observed the violence from the roof of a local authority building.

There was no sign of Japanese troops, 550 of whom operate from a base in Samawa, conducting civil reconstruction work.

3. What a mess.
I see the DOD have been all over talking up the 'win' over in Iraq so I guess that is for Bush's talk to night. Back to landing on deck I guess.

5. Oh yeah, Freedom Is On The March all right. Horrible. One positive
glimmer in this tragic story - we are hearing about it. Six months ago I don't think we would have. The news suppression is fraying at last.

Will be interesting to see the coverage of the blivet""'s lying "Iraq status" speech. Oh, I do hope that he does claim that he never misled, never made a mistake, and things are going swimmingly and entirely according to excellent Bush Administration plans. It might turn the light on for more people - this man is a serial liar. And once that light turns on for enough of the public, our fight will become easier.

12. And the only reason this is happening is because the
troops are coming home and telling their loved ones how FUBAR it is over there.

This was the beginning of the end of Vietnam, too. It was the troops coming home and telling of all the death and war crimes.

Good morning, NWH - :hi:

13. I also think that the corruption and lies are just getting too unwieldy
to hold - see this encouraging LTTE by a 25-year Republican who is now quitting his party. It's a beauty and needs to be publicized more widely:

Thread title: “As of today, after 25 years, I am no longer a Republican.”
There are many encouraging signs in this letter, among them that he cites the DSMs as revealing how the Bush Administration has lied and deliberately deceived. The message is finally being received.

After a point, the truth becomes self-evident despite all the desperate spinning and lies. We need to be welcoming to the Republicans of integrity who finally perceive that they have been betrayed and lied to. We can always get back to arguing over traditional Dem vs GOP issues later, after we save democracy. The current administration is NOT representative of traditional GOP beliefs, a point we need to make very clear so that more people can find the courage to move beyond party loyalty to the greater good.

And good morning to you too, Clark2008! Good to see you and hope you and yours are well. :hi:

7. No it won't
You assume that republicans care about anyone other then themselves. They consider all Muslims to be terrorists anyways.

They'd just find some way to blame it all on liberals. That's their style...

8. What the hell is wrong over here?
Who in the hell is allowing the police to go around shooting protestors or demonstrators?

It's like this just went from bad to worse, I thought we were supposedly going to "secure" the city from attacks?

11. Brilliant way for the 'collaborators' to make inroads with the rest of the
population. I guess they've learned from American politics, particularly the republican party. Isn't that where the "I got mine so f*** you" method came from? If not, they've refined it to an artform.
