Anyone want some perspective on "a dozen years of war?"
Edited on Mon Jun-27-05 10:17 AM by Redstone
Let's see, Viet Nam really heated up in, oh, about 1963, and finished up in 1975, which would have been about, let me check my math here, twelve years later.

And at 1500-plus U.S. dead in the first two years in Iraq, we're looking at about ten thousand over twelve years.

Plus the wounded and crippled for life. How many of those? 75,000?

And Iraqis. Any guesses? Half a million?

Excuse me, I need to go throw up yet again. I don't know how much more of these people I can take.

Edited to make it clear that the 1500-dead in-two years figure refers to Iraq, not Viet Nam.

(This is a combination of two of my prior posts; I hope it's OK to repeat myself.)

2. I take it they're testing the waters with that statement.
If it's front-page news around the country with no riots in the streets, I guess they'll feel they've got it made. Permanent war accepted just like that, with hardly a complaint or whimper from the majority.

If the country gets up in arms, they'll just backtrack with a "Oh, of course we'll leave before that; it's up to the Iraqis to solve that problem."

These warmongers are very clever at certain things.

3. How could we send a message without
being too unruly? Maybe if half the country called in sick on Wednesday, would that send a message?

4. I think it would be effective is some large-city newspapers
had a simple table at the bottom of their front page each day, listing how many days since we invaded, how many US dead, and how many US wounded.

Not that there's a major-market newspaper in the country that would have the guts.

And, of course, not that they'd be able to tally dead Iraqis, since of course our government doesn't give a fuck about them, so it doesn't even bother to count.

6. I guess if a few tried that and it got readers, the rest would follow.
Same with TV news. If one network tried it and viewers were angry enough to watch it every night, it would be all over for the war party.
