Poll: Bush Job Approval Dips to New Low

By WILL LESTER
The Associated Press
Friday, June 10, 2005; 7:24 PM

WASHINGTON -- When it comes to public approval, President Bush and Congress are playing "how low can you go." Bush's approval mark is 43 percent, while Congress checks in at 31 percent, an Associated Press-Ipsos poll found. Both are the lowest levels yet for the survey, started in December 2003.

"There's a bad mood in the country, people are out of sorts," said Charles Jones, a presidential scholar and senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. "Iraq news is daily bad news."

The public also is showing concerns about the direction of the country as the war in Iraq drags on. Only about one-third of adults, 35 percent, said they thought the country was headed in the right direction. Forty-one percent said they supported Bush's handling of the war in Iraq, also a low-water mark.

Gail Thomas, an independent who leans Democratic from Prattville, Ala., said the war in Iraq was a distraction after the Sept. 11, 2001, attack ordered by Osama bin Laden.

1. I thought it was 43% for quite a while now.
Is that just some sort of threshold where no one in the White House can go any lower?

2. And what was Clinton's approval rating
during the height of the impeachment debacle? Sixty nine percent?

3. That's kind of a double entendre approval rating, isn't it?
69 percent? :o

6. ZZZZZZ...Who Cares?
He can't run again and by the time the mid-term elections are here it will be back hovering around 50%. Let's stop predicting W's demise and look towards '08 with a conservative candidate like Richardson or Warner.

9. Why should we support conservatives?
Seems kind of counter productive to me.

14. Just HOW will his numbers rise....
to "around 50%" by the mid-terms? Is he going to plunge the U.S. into another needless war? Is the "bush economic miracle" going to turn yet another corner? Will there be another "terraist" attack on our soil on his watch?
As far as looking forward to "'08 with a conservative candidate like Richardson or Warner......are you SURE you're registered at the correct site? This is DEMOCRATIC Underground.

17. Heh.
Transparent much?

Actually it's a BIG deal, the approval rating. You aren't very informed if you don't know that. Did you notice that 31% approval rating for heavily repuke Congress? B-A-D news for them. That's a SUCKY approval level.

And btw, any repuke who wants to run for president or Congress in 2006 and 2008, the people are going to be looking at their recent feelings about both Congress and the president and that will affect THEIR choices.

Ahem. YOU connect the dots. No president, not even a lame-duck one, wants such low approval numbers. His party tends to get pretty pissed about that.

10. "out of sorts" is putting it mildly...I am TOTALLY PISSED!
At the Rethugs, of course, but almost as pissed at the Democrats for being so stupid that they go after Dean while we've got the DSM and today's abuse at the Patriot Act hearing.

I swear, if they don't start getting unified and attack the people deserving to be attacked, I'll wash my hands of them all.

"approval" ratings are. He's clueless in every way that counts.

we ALL know about Dumbya's penchant for animals. Laura gave us a very explicit description of his "love" for animals. :eyes:

20. Welcome to DU. If you can keep that guy busy on the approval ratings,
we can keep him away from the Diebold machines in 2006 and 2008. Those are the approval ratings that count.
