The Charleston Gazette SLAMS * bad on Downing St and Stem Cells

Bush decided to wage an entirely elective war against a country that presented little or no threat to us. And according to the Downing Street memo, he damn well knew it, too.

The destruction of life in Iraq is more dramatic than taking a blastocyst smaller than a pinpoint out of a petri dish. The 1,600 American dead so far — not much culture of life there. The 15,000 wounded, many of them irreparably — not so good there, either. Estimates of Iraqi civilian deaths are all over the lot — a British medical journal claimed 100,000 last year, the Iraq Body Count Web site says between 21,000 and 25,000. The U.S./U.N. sanctions are widely believed to have killed hundreds of thousands, most of them babies, even after the Oil for Food Program was instituted.

3. For the first time I feel...
like Impeachment is possible. This memo, if well known will move the people. Let's just keep it out there.

20. Hans Blix was used by Bush and Blair in an elaborate dog and pony show.
His return to the spotlight would have more impact on those who were sold on the war.

13. As are the families of the servicemen who have died or been maimed
As are the hundreds of thousands of Iraqis who've died or been maimed in this war brought about by lies. I'm afraid Hans Blix is gonna have to stand in a long line.

19. Without question the families of the killed/maimed should get an apology.
A Hans Blix return to the spotlight will underline what a sham it all was from the beginning.

9. There's Still More Dots To Connect
Sadly, most sheeple can't connect the Downing Street memo and "impeachement". How does a memo leaked to a newspaper in London have anything to do with Billy Joe Bob fighting them "Islamists"? There's not enough to chew on for most to see the direct connection between the deliberate planning of this invasion and that others knew it.

For many, the noise that's surrounded the invasion and its aftermath have muddled things further. Try asking someone why we've invaded Iraq and you'll hear different answers...if you hear an answer at all. Sadly, if a person isn't directly connected to this thing...they haven't had a close family member not just sent to Iraq, but return with a scrambled brain or worse...or felt anything directly by this war. Without this feeling, this regime can continue to slide by and lie and divert attention. Keep the bodies and funerals off TV, keep the reporters holed up in the Green Zone, control the flow of information and manipulate the media. One memo won't erase all this "hard work".

16. Here again, is why it is critical
when speaking to people to refer to the Downing Street Minutes. It's an excellent first talking point. They say memo, which implies a post-it note, we say MINUTES while clarifying that MINUTES are THE OFFICIAL DOCUMENTATION OF AN OFFICIAL MEETING. OFFICIAL RECORDS OF AN OFFICIAL GOVERNMENT MEETING. Seemslikeadream did the most wonderful crawler...

Lemme see if I can find her... ;-)

12. When you have an option choose to stand in the longest line!!!!
When I go somewhere to buy anything I intentionally stand in the longest line and look friendly. When someone says hi, or tries to start a conversation I bring up Downing St., and it usually works. Most reasonable people do not like lies, and they don't like the idea of their brothers and sisters dying for lies. It really does work. Try it.

14. I believe Molly reads DU!
The Gazette tells the truth in the mornings here in Charleston and the ultra Reich wing rag the Charleston Daily Mail comes along in the evenings and tells the local sheeple the days KKKarl Rove news flashes. You can tell who votes pubby here in our neighborhoods, by watching the guys deliver the evening paper! IMHO the Daily Mail isn't even reliable enough to put on the bottom of my bird cage!

22. Great article
But keep in mind that this is a Molly Ivins guest op-ed, and it's not the Charleston Gazette's own editorializing. That paper could run an opposing viewpoint on the DSM tomorrow.

But the fact that they ran this superb Ivins piece is truly cause for celebration!

A good idea to spread the word: E-mail the Ivins article, today's Bob Herbert/NYT editorial, and yesterday's Nader/Boston Globe editorial to your hometown paper's editor and ask that he/she consider running one or all of them.
