If Clark is elected....(or any other Democrat)
Edited on Sat Sep-20-03 07:48 PM by bluestateguy
Will conservatives continue with the Presidential Prayer Team? (www.presidentialprayerteam.org). Will we see lawn signs in suburban Dallas that say "We Support President Clark and Our Troops?" Will pastors in fundamentalist churches exclaim from the pulpit that Wesley Clark was chosen by God for the presidency? Will President Clark be made out to be the living embodiment of God, Country and Patriotism? Will the same people who lectured us for 4 years that it was unpatriotic to criticize the president continue to say so when Clark is president? Of course, the same question could be asked of any Democrat who is elected president.

1. When LBJ was president and increasing the Vietnam war,
he had lots of support from the right. It was the left who drove him out of office. So, if Clark or Dean or Kerry or whoever is president starts invading other countries in outlandish wars, yes, the right will typically support him and the left will complain.

2. Probably not.
These days the right has taken a dogmatic, blind and deceiving approach to believing whatever they please when it comes to conservatives vs. non-conservatives. Of course you remember all the supposed moral-breaking activities that Clinton took part in or initiated. But not once did any of them call for a word of prayer for the President.

Besides that, Clinton took a number of measures in office that were designed to placate the radical right, much to the dismay of the left. He was in many ways actually quite conservative but that just wasn't good enough for the right and that was ONLY because he was a registered democrat.

Conservatives just don't want to see the good that has been done for them when Clinton was in office.

5. If they liked it, Clinton didn't do it.
According to them, every good thing (by their definition or otherwise) that happened when Clinton was in office was done without his participation. Every bad thing that happened any time, any place, seems to be his fault. In short, no, I don't think the real rightwing will support any measures a Democratic president these days. At least not the real rightwing in its present form.
