I think this is the best approach. I'm agnostic on the whole Andy thing, but I have followed it out of sociologic interest. This cutting off conversation about it is not the way to go, it just makes things look fishy, not to mention how authoritarian and conservative an approach it is. Let everybody speak and it'll go away. Cut off conversation and it just festers. Fact is, Andy put his medical condition out there to raise money, so the situation is fair game for discussion in the village square.

Why are people who are uninvolved concerned about Andy's donations? Even if this was a "scam", which I don't believe it is, what business is it of theirs? And who are they to demand answers?

Will has shown himself to be honestly and emotionally vulnerable to the BS. Everyone is to some degree. These people are equal opportunity disrupters wherever there is an Internet forum but to be graced by a gang visit is a compliment of their concern more than anything they have to say - which is practically nil. I am nearly positive, in spite of their sticking to a party line propaganda language, that some are VERY busy camping out in pairs at forums all over wherever there is little weeding being done. But it almost makes no difference since the attack is always the same, the facts spewed and the argumentation and the insults and whining- not to mention the shouting of the lousy spellers. When you are "up there" trying to make your points you are always ripe for sandbagging by people cleverly looking for a disruptive opening. Being a teacher helps, but with no classroom presence to deal with I'd merely red-ink their efforts and send them packing.

In the end, since the cowards disguise most of their real motivation, they must be treated like any over the top kid shouting and flaming in the chat room. Children trying to get attention by being abusive cannot obviously be granted what they wish and are the most difficult to deal with- especially hard in an anonymous invisible medium.

Playing fast and loose with both facts and emotions is a technique- not a reasoned position. I much prefer the moderation at DU which does not pretend to be ironclad or perfect so that no false sense of consensus and security makes us lazy or smug. At the same time we are pretty much in control of the situation in so far as we really earn it.

I have not followed other bloggers much to understand how they singlehandedly deal with the dumploads of garbage they must receive daily. Probably should get together and share notes sometimes. Imagine how journalists feel about getting this stuff versus calmer intellectually sound critiques(which can be dismissed airily) when they are not aired in public as with open blogging. Death threats sometimes are not as emotionally troubling though they come from the same crowd.

It is very bad for the stomach to wander into a conversation with these
types- and they know it. That is there sole rational power in the argument. That plus the difficulty in playing by their "rules" without fast fact checking and support.

I read various sites and blogs and I'm fully convinced there are some RWers out there who just say things to get a reaction just for kicks. At first glance I didn't notice, but the more I read some of the responses I get the impression that's a lot of what's going on. Like I said on a similar thread, this site is nothing but a freak show for them.
