Theory: The 'Nuclear Option" crisis is the end game of a conspriracy that
.... started in the Clinton years. When Newtie took the country hostage with his Contract on America®, the conspiracy started ....... to keep open as many judgeships as possible by whatever means possible. Now that they have the power, they want to fill not only the 'naturally occuring' vacancies, but also those they fought to keep open.

That's my theory du jour an' I'm stickin' to it.

1. Wouldn't be surprised
if this was the case. Hard to prove though, but not an idiotic assumption by any means.

2. well hell yeah. but what is really going to freak them out is
when the judges they get appointed start to vote against the shit they want. they they will start looking for super nuts to appoint. actually in my heart I hope they do end the filibusters.

the only problem with that dems would not return the favor if they took back control of the senate. god I would love to see dems in 06 kill every judicial nom with a simple 51 vote. oh my goodness, if that were to happen, I'd think the repugs would start jumping from the top of the capital building.

3. A weird theory
If Cheney uses the nuke, which I believe he will, then what? The Dems walk out? What really happens? Since we are under a dictatorship
and all the rules seem to be rewritten, wouldn't Cheney and co. love nothing more than to just only have the rethugs remaining? In other words, wouldn't Cheney just want to see to it that those pesky Dems are out of the way of their plans for global dominance? Seems like the Dems would just be in the way, with their crazy logic. This is a horrible nitemare, I know, but so is this administration! I certainly hope we are not walking into a TWAP!

5. Can I recommend a book for you to read? David Brock's
Blinded by the Right. He says the conspriracy started with The Federalist Society, a conservative society started on college campuses all over the country by academics and future-politician types,as a reaction to the anti-war sentiment of the 60's and 70's. The local Societies were used as training grounds for political work in Washington, DC. and were funded by rich conservatives like Scaife and Vigarie. Their main purpose was to take over the country by judicial fiat (taking over the courts) to impose their social and political agenda on the country. In fact, when Sen Schumer had his conference call with the lib bloggers yesterday, he mentioned that he had never seen anything like this..that the pukes had gotten their marching orders from the Federalist Society, and were not going to deviate from them.

About Gingrich, he says that the neocons of the period had just lost their main opponent, communism, when communist countries started falling like dominoes. The neocons needed another enemy badly...they chose the Dems. "Newt's analogy of Americal liberalism to world Communism made it possible for us (Brock was a neocon at that time) to continue to divide the world into white hats and black hats, to channel our fears in a new direction. No longer would the Dems simply be opposed; they would be destroyed......Newt's overarching strategy was to portray the differences between the two parties as at root moral, not political, laying the rhetorical groundwork for an offensive that would play out in Washington over the next several years....As early as 1978, in his first race for Congress, Gingrich, called for a return to moral values. He used certain outrageously stigmatizing language, long aa hallmark of right-wing political organizing, to caricature the opposition as immoral, even evil. 'People like me are what stand between us and Auschwitz....I see evil around me every day.' Newt called the Dems sick, grotesque, loony, stupid, corrupt, anti-family and traitors. Newt did take himself seriously, as did legions of other RWers across the country....Newt's appeal was based less on political philosophy or ideology than on raw emotion. People instinctively identified with his fanatical hatred of the left."

Please buy this book...it reads like a novel, is extremely interesting and insightful about the emergence of the right-right.

7. Goes back to at least the late '70s & early '80s...
that was when Fundy billionaire Howard Ahmanson funded the creation of what would become ES&S and Diebold Election Systems...

14. Yanno .... it also occurs to me that this could be more than a long
running conspiracy. It could also be partially plain old desperation.

They see the numbers tanking - now at about 45%. They see support shrinking back to the lunatic base - what .... ? 30%? 35%?.

Their pact with Satan (Dobson, et al) calls for them to get the judges in. And they intend to do it. Come hell, high water, or nuclear opposition.

It seems there's a 'do it now, cuz we may not have another chance' mood afoot on their side.
