Vicious Anti Gay Resolution :Lapeer County Michigan
Just got this on email from www.tri.org
Its an uphill battle for gay rights in small counties and towns here in Michigan....

------------------------------------------------
Text of Lapeer County Resolution

Whereas, The Board of Commissioners of Lapeer County supports Michigan's existing one man - one woman marriage law, MCL 551.1, which reads as follows:

"Marriage is inherently a unique relationship between a man and a woman. As a matter of public policy, this state has a special interest in encouraging, supporting, and protecting that unique relationship in order to promote, among other goals, the stability and welfare of society and its children. A marriage contracted between individuals of the same sex is invalid in this state."; and,

Whereas: Organizations such as the Center for Disease Control and the American Medical Association report that an overwhelming disproportionate number of cases of Aids , Gonorrhea, Hepatitis A, and Hepatitis B are accounted for in homosexuals, and legalization of gay marriages opens the floodgate for adoption, foster-care, custody and childcare in which innocent children could be at risk.; and,

Whereas, That on October 4, 1982, in a joint resolution of both the Senate and the House of Representatives in the 97th Congress of the United States of America Public Law 97-280 was passed which reads as follows:

"Whereas, that renewing our knowledge of and faith in God through Holy Scriptures can strengthen us as a nation and as a people....The Bible, the Word of God, has made a unique contribution in shaping the United States as a distinctive and blessed nation....Deeply held religious convictions springing from the Holy Scriptures led to the early settlement of our Nation....Biblical teaching inspired concepts of civil rights government that are contained in our Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States."; and,

Whereas, that these same Holy Scriptures reveled by the 97th Congress of the United States show God's intentions for mankind in the institution of marriage and read as follows:

"Genesis 2:22 Then the Lord God made a woman....and he brought her to the man.
2:24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh."; and,

Whereas, We believe that the people of Lapeer County have the right to vote on an issue that so fundamentally affects the fabric and social foundation of our families and communities.

Therefore, Be It Resolved,

That the members of the Lapeer County Board of Commissioners do hereby support a "Marriage Protection Amendment" to the Michigan State Constitution, securing the definition of marriage exclusively between one man and one woman. And further, encourage our state legislators to vote in favor of referring such amendment to the ballot to be decided by the people of the State of Michigan and not the courts.

1. All this is a resuolution by a bumch of bible thumpers. They are trying
to get a state constitutional amendment which would be more probablimatic. You need to connect up RIGHT away with active GLT groups who propably already have people here working on this now. Do it. You'll learn a lot.

3. The triangle foundation is working on it
I fight in my own town now here in Michigan. Im not in Lapeer County, and the letters to the editor and editorials are flying fast and furious here in the small town I live in. Luckily, I have cameras pointed at my yard, as I am considered the evil one due to my letters to the editor. If the shit hits the fan here, and the city council tries this, there are plenty of people I know who will fight it.

2. whats with the breaking out in psalms???
ugh! i love how they dont mention that 50% if not more of straight marriages end up in divorce, the abuse--physical, mental, the strain that divorce puts on the finacial and emotional well-being of the parent with custody (especially when the other parent doesnt pay child-support).

instead lets focus on the gay/aids fear.

4. "Leper" County? They should be ostracized, anyway....
the gist of the motion aside, what the hell is a public body doing packing a resolution with Old Testament verses? That is insane!
Oh, wait, Congress did it, too.
Where is this hateful place, exactly?

6. Someone in MI should file suit as this sounds like
an endorsement of a specific religion.

The Lapeer County Commission--in the state of Michigan--for reminding everybody that not all the knuckle-dragging inbreds live in the South!

11. a couple of thoughts
1. I'd like to see this thread maintain high visibility for Michigan DU-ers, among others.

2. In addition to some of the more obvious sources (e.g.- Between the Lines, Triangle Foundation), the Green House in Ferndale could be helpful in publicizing this issue.

Best of luck.

14. Oakland County Also
I seem to recall reading a couple weeks ago that the Oakland County (Mich.) Commission passed a similar resolution, although I'm not sure it called for an amendment to the state's constitution.
