What do the RW'ers know about Persecution?
I often trot out my Girlfriend on DU. I love her so much and I am very proud of her. She is Liberal, a Feminist, very Tolerant of the religions of other people, and she has many more traits that make me glad that I want to be with her for the rest of Eternity.

For those of you that don't know. She is from Somalia and she is a Muslim (that is why I am also a Muslim).

Whenever the 'christian' Rightists speak of Persecution, I look at her.

Her body is scarred, she is very, very shy, she is afraid of many things, she came from a nation of warlords and Civil War, and she grew up in a Refugee Camp. All of these things tell me that she suffered from REAL Persecution.

The Democrats justifiably blocked 4% of Bush's Judicial Nominees, and that is Persecution? Ha!

You RW'ers know nothing about Persecution.

1. It's persecution by Dubya's standards.
You're clearly not looking at this from the perspective of someone born with a silver spoon in his mouth whose every ambition has been subsidised by rich oil businessmen and whose every failure has just gone away.

5. the radical right definition of "persecution" = not being able
to push their agenda on everyone else. It is disgusting definition, as it defies what persecution means - the potential loss of life, mobility, the ability to own property or hold a job, based on religious (or political) beliefs. History (and contemporary times) is ripe with examples of real, tragic persecution.

These fools are demagogues. For this Christians eyes we are in an era of false prophets - and these folks are evil - they are leading people "in the name of God" - further and further from the Grace of God. US history is ripe with such disgusting episodes, where religion is used as a rationale to engage in policies that are destructive to peoples... native americans... slaves.... minorities... the poor and destitute... all in the name of religion.

Persecution - now defined as not being able to Bully. Trivializes real persecution.. further anesthetizes the public to ongoing persecution around the world. Such a sad, tragic chapter in contemporary America.

6. The same can be heard in Britain by the
right-wingers here. Things like "You're not allowed to be white anymore", and "We're the only group left where its legal to be racist towards"

And the classic of the toffs fight to keep hunting foxes with dogs, which was to be outlawed. They were going to take their case to the european court of human rights on grounds of persecution.

there is a certain class in society that feel they have a god given right to certain things. If this isn't realised they howl persecution.

Your girlfriend does indeed sound like she's had a hard start. Horrific situations illuminate a persons inner character. I wonder what sought of characters would emerge from the present administration if they had to endure such hardship.

Good luck to you both

7. To them, persecution is the same as it is when perceived by a 3 year old
If they don't get their way NOW, they're being persecuted. Their current behavior is the equivalent of kicking, screaming and holding their breath til they turn blue :)

8. void of all empathy
The single most stand out trait of the RW is a total lack of empathy with anyone other than themselves. They are completely unable to identify with others. I have always admired the tradition of fasting during Ramadan, which was explained to me once by a Muslim, as learning to empathize with the hungry. Can you imagine the average overstuffed RW fundie going without their supersized big macs for a day?

10. i'm so very glad
that you have your girlfriend, and that she has you-
That she was able to survive the hell she's been through and has a supportive, loving partner who doesn't be-little her, and from the sounds of it, will do much to help her regain a level of 'trust' in human'kind'-

i'd like to hug you both-

The right wing knows alot about persecution- from the perspective of how to inflict it-.... most of the things 'we've accused or feared that other "evildoers" would do to 'us' come from within our own 'evil-twisted' minds-

Stop and think about it- if 'we're' afraid of terrible 'atrocities' we must have thought up the possibility (and i believe in some instances, sadly committed) the very thing we say we hope to avert/abolish/end.

Sometimes, when i hear the kinds of 'crap' 'we' are told to fear and 'be on alert for' i wonder how much of this is out of 'our own' secret ops manuals- Its fine to talk about being 'righteous' and 'civil'- but the real test is how we ACT- or refuse too.

We have become a very spoiled, selfish, complacient, and whiny society- without a 'clue' to what real honest suffering and opppression is all about (speaking of the Country in 'general' not specific individuals)
