A look back - Falwell's Remarks Prompt Riots in India
"Five people were killed Friday in Hindu-Muslim rioting and police gunfire after riots broke out during a general strike to protest the Rev. Jerry Falwell calling the founder of Islam a terrorist. Forty-seven others were injured.

The rioters attacked each other with knives and stones during the strike called to protest what Falwell said on CBS television early this month. Muslim organizations said Falwell's remarks were derogatory and blasphemous.

The conservative Baptist minister told the television network Islam's prophet "was a — a violent man, a man of war."

"Jesus set the example for love, as did Moses," Falwell said. "I think Muhammad set an opposite example.""

Where was the Bush Administration when this happened? Why were they so willing to strike down Newsweek but not Falwell (Rhetorical)?

2. Excellent question
As Sam Harris said in his book "The End of Faith: Religion, Terror, and the Future of Reason", and I paraphrase, "The Muslim faith does not distinguish between religious and secular pronouncements. When a Christian cleric makes a pronouncement it is assumed, in the Muslim world, that they have the force of the government behind them." That's why statements by our "clerics" have such an effect in the Middle East.

4. Oh well, we'll just blame it on Newsweek and pat Falwell on the back.
Or should it be "pat Robertson on the back"? :silly:

9. Robertson is usually on all fours
with Falwell right behind him. I don't even want to know what position Jeff Gannon was in. :puke: Maybe W was getting in on it too.

8. And the same Raza Academy was involved in those riots
See the thread at http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x3666986 for the active role of the Raza Academy in the current Mumbai protests. The fundamentalist Raza Academy was also behind some of the Falwell riots:

http://www.frontlineonnet.com/fl1922/stories/20021108004508700.htm

A Muslim group called the Raza Academy called for a bandh by Muslim businesses to protest against Falwell's remark. No other Muslim organisation supported the bandh. In fact, most of them spoke out against it.

Nevertheless, riots broke out in Solapur on October 11 when a rally turned violent after some youth insisted that all shopkeepers down their shutters.

11. Didn't you get the memo?
This sort of thing is "patriotic" and Jerry Falwell should be honored as a true American hero. :sarcasm:

Another example of blatant right-wing hipocrisy.
