So Let Me Get this Straight (re Newsweek Story)
Edited on Mon May-16-05 01:08 PM by maxrandb
Someone please help me understand this.

Newsweek does a story that is sourced by a senior admin person. They run it by two senior Pentagon officials. We make a formal apology in 2003 for treatment of detainees in GITMO, including using their religious beliefs against them.

Follow me so far? OK, so now I hear every right-wing talking head demanding everything from "revoking Newsweek's White House access", to "firing Isikoff (sp)", to "criminally prosecuting Newsweek".

This story (which is probably still accurate despite all the back-tracking) resulted in demonstrations, the loss of 15 lives, and the injury of hundreds.

But.....

On the other hand, the leader of the free world lied about WMD. Cooked intelligence. Lied to us about the connection between 9/11 and Iraq, and generally made shit up as he went along.

His actions resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians; the deaths of over 1600 Americans; the drainage of Americas blood and treasure, and yet..

I don't hear a peep from the right-wing.

Something is really wrong with this country.

4. Selective outrage
We're not mad about killing hundreds of thousands of people in an illegal, unjustified war. We're not angry about large corporations shipping jobs overseas, cancelling our pensions and then voting themselves a raise, but if someone says "Happy Holidays" that is just too much!

They are getting quite arrogant about their fascism now. Maybe that will be their downfall.

11. Blaming the messenger...
You see, the 15 deaths aren't due to the military's actions, they're due to Newsweek reporting the military's actions.

16. Yup, you got it! NPR -Talk of the Nations on LIVE with Newsweek NOW
I don't know if he will be on the whole show, but he IS on NOW.

Oh, he just finished, here's a rundown to the rest of the Newsweek part of the show.

In 'Newsweek' Fallout, Questions of Its Sources

Audio for this story will be available at approx. 6:00 p.m. ET

Talk of the Nation, May 16, 2005 · After an item in Newsweek about U.S. interrogators desecrating the Koran at Guantanamo Bay sparked deadly riots in Afghanistan, the magazine now says its source has backed away from those claims. We host a discussion of credibility, media impact, and the continuing reliance on anonymous sources.

Guests: Brant Houston, executive director of Investigative Reporters and Editors, Inc., and a professor at the University of Missouri School of Journalism

David Marston, partner at Gibbons, Del Deo

17. You make a good point.
I think it's time we started to look at this administration's arrogance. People have been commenting on this ever since this web site came into being.

It's not just the DU that's noticed this. It's been noticed all over the world; wherever the US has its dealings, we see unflinching arrogance.

There's only one way to get rid of this attitude: get them out. They're not able to change. And this arrogance colors everything they do. It limits their view of the world. They have a very narrow scope and there's no room for the truth.

Something is REALLY wrong with this country.
