Protesters outside the local recruitment office
What a great scene just outside my window, 3 people holding signs in the pouring rain in front of the Army recruiter's office, "Recruiters Lie" and "US Get Out Of Iraq". I have never seen anything like this around here!

1. What a great idea!
We have a highly visible recruiting office on a major road in town. I'm going to dash off an email to the progressive organizers in town. They'll be all over this.

5. GOOD. Someone needs to tell those kids that if they sign, they are
FUCKED. Fucked, and STUCK. Even in the case of a fraudulent enlistment, where the kid lies on the 1066 form, the military can still keep 'em if they need 'em. For as long as they want. Regardless of what the "contract" says.

We need more of this. We also need some ads on the teevee or on them there internets telling these young'uns what is up. They won't get facts from a desperate recruiter. I do feel sorry for the recruiters, they aren't volunteers, and they are being forced to abandon their integrity or risk severe punishment.

That said, I won't let any of my dearly loved ones sign on the line. It just ain't happening...and my family has a multigenerational history of honorable military service. Well, the chain is being broken, thanks to Chimp's dumbass policies.

It's no longer patriotic, it's suicide.

6. Lowell MA
We'll see about the coverage, they are also directly across the street from the local republican news rag www.lowellsun.com. I doubt it will be covered, though I stopped a news photographer on a nearby street and directed him to the protest.

7. Link to followup story in the local paper

LOWELL -- Protesters outside the National Guard recruiting office in Kearney Square yesterday verbally sparred with passers-by over the war in Iraq and recruiters' tactics, but managed to avoid
violence., Recruiters inside the office largely ignored the protest, which was the second this year.

8. Yeah, those pacifist protestors
Sure spark a lot of violence. I'm glad that the rest of Lowell MA wasn't sucked in by their rhetoric into thinking that the protestors were just a bunch of people expressing their patriotic viewpoint. In reality, they were ready to go off at any second but for the extreme discipline and restraint of Lowellians.

9. People Need To Get The Word Out
My younger brother, who just turned 18 and is graduating from high school this week, is getting bombarded with calls. It's amazing how much B.S. they are selling this kids. He has told me that they have promised him on several occassions that they could keep him out of Iraq, to use their logic, because there are "so many people in the military that don't have to go Iraq". Yeah, right. They are starting in the schools earlier and earlier, profiling low-to-mid income families and luring their pray. Plus, you get to be labeled "unpatriotic" if you don't fall for their b.s. Plus don't think that you are exempt from recruiting if you are in your 20's: I was approached one afternoon at a gas station while filling up a container for my lawnmower. I let them go on and on, until I told them I was 25. They said that was fine, come on! I then told them that I was not fighting dirty wars under the guise of patriotism and politely said I couldn't take the pay cut.

I'm getting sick and tired of it. I have told several people who have said that I should be ashamed of myself for being so anti-recruiting to sign their own kids up to go, especially if you voted for a republican.

Anyway, I'm sorry to be babbling on, but this issue really gets under my skin.

10. Can a parent talk to the recruiter for your brother?
They were harassing my son, said I couldn't stop them - until I reminded them that it was MY telephone # they were calling, not my sons. I threatened to charge them with making harassing phone calls, and they stopped calling.

11. Tried that
My family tried that approach after trying to dissuade them from calling in a non-confrontational manner. Then they just laughed and said "You can't stop me from calling your son". Needless to say, my father was livid.
