My Dream for DU
Who could have missed the way we spoke with one voice when Andy became ill and could not pay for health care? If we could choose 3 top priorities and organize as we did for Andy, we could make them happen. Andy is championing Voter Verified Paper Ballots and Universal Health Care for All. These should be near the top of the list and are things we can all pretty much agree upon.

Instead of fighting over controversial issues, why can't we speak with one voice on the important issues?

It's easy to organize when a friend is in terrible trouble and we know exactly what he needs. Well, our friend the United States is in terrible trouble and she needs a lot of things. We need to triage her right away so we can decide exactly what needs to be done.

Does anyone understand what I mean? Our activity is all over the map right now. Mine is pretty sporadic since I don't always feel very good. But if we can come up with a few issues that are necessary for success and push them the same way we pushed to get Andy his medical care, we would be a lot more successful.

Thoughts?

1. This has been my vision as well...
the only problem is, who chooses which causes? How can we all agree? Getting DUers to agree on simple things is like hearding cats!!

3. Hmmmm...how hard have we tried?
Of course, it's hard to designate a leader of cats who could decide what is most important.

It only took a few people to organize on Andy's behalf, but if I stood up in GD and tried to, say, organize a march on Washington, I wouldn't get very far.

Voter Verified Paper Ballots

^^^^Now this seems important to me and should be to everyone. Am I wrong? I would love to see about getting some kind of legislation for this county. If I were halfway well, I could become the voice of verified voting here and report back to DU.

4. So, maybe we should figure out what factors were present (or absent)...
...in Andy's crisis that made it easy for us to unite.

6. Good point.

It was 1) obvious and 2) extremely pressing. We knew Andy didn't have a lot of time for us to debate the issues down to a fine point.

Perhaps we should consider a number of threads for people to discuss what the most important issues are, then put them to a vote, poll-style.

The top three get addressed first.

That would get us organized, but there would be a debate process that was absent with Andy--a debate process that might tear us apart. It still might work if we gave the debates a finite amount of time and insisted upon no ad hominem attacks and a strict policy of respect. Perhaps Skinner and company could be persuaded to moderate these threads more stringently than the others because they would be ripe for right-wing attacks, if nothing else. Sweet Jesus, those horrible trolls even tried to keep us from helping Andy. :(

On edit: I'd like to see some of DU's "leaders" comment on this idea, see how they feel.

7. I vote for a free press.
I have no idea how to make that happen, however.
