Hey DU! Please Sign this Online Petition In Support Of Election Reform!
Edited on Mon May-09-05 05:15 PM by DistressedAmerican
The petition is in support of NJ Congressman Rush Holt, who has written bill HR-550.

This comprehensive bill will require a paper backup verifiable audit trail for public elections, specifically for electronic voting machines. for more info- see www.peacecoalition.org

The lady who posted it is only looking for 500 signatures. We can push her way over that number if we put our support behind it!

Petition Text:
Support Verified Voting / Call for investigations

We want to feel confident and proud of our democracy again. Election reform is a high priority, and a valid nonpartisan concern. Meaningful election reforms will not take place, until there is a full and clear understanding of the many reported incidents of unfair treatment of people trying to vote, and complaints of equipment malfunctions and alleged sabotage. We can not fix this, unless we know the hows and why of what went wrong. The verified vote is definitely a step in the right direction, and we urge you to support the RH-550 bill.

However this important step is not enough. We need competent and complete investigations, and as deemed necessary prosecutions and penalties for any crimes against our democracy. Many have fought and even died for our democracy. We must not dishonor them. Our democracy counts! Freedom and justice are essential components to our democracy, and we need you represent us in this just cause. It is our right to demand that you do the right thing.

Please sign and keep kicked!

Peace!

1. Did Andy endorse this bill?
There's a number of them out there and now I can't remember which ones had all the main points we need.

2. Didn't Know There Was A Central Comittee On The Issue...
I've read the bill and I endorse it. Hope others will too.

Anyone know what the party line is these days?

Anyhow, it has verifiable paper ballots and that's the main thing.

I'm signing.

5. Didn't mean to sound snarky at all. Just being funny.
Post three clears it up. A lot of folks are interested in paper ballots only. That definitely has its merits.

Folks should take a look at what is out there.

At this point, I personally support ANY move toward verifiability.

Thanks for the support. You rock.

3. Um, I know that Andy strongly endorses
language that promotes a paper "ballot," NOT a "trail" or "receipt." I worked with Andy on a local election reform forum and he strongly believes that the technology we call for should create an auditable ballot. Look at Andy's quote at the bottom of all his posts.

Do we know enough about this program to endorse it?

I am in support of either. Both are a far sight better than our current "black Box" scenario.:toast:

21. Thanks!!! Let's do it.
I linked Velvet Revolution to my blog-that is an awesome site!
thanks also linked your post card page- also other ones to from progressive sites.
For those that can, it's of course a good idea to support progressive web sites. I already bought some, and will be buying a few more -after next pay check.
I do want to mention that index cards will also work it is the THOUGHT and ACTION that counts.
I put contact links GOV and media also on the blog, but I know everyone here is pretty UP on that stuff.
Honestly I really hope folks will do the post card thing, I just think it might have a little more impact, and it's more personnel- express your thoughts and maybe even a touch of rage, or at least indignation.
Investigate, Prosecute, Impeach & Punish in order to restore our democracy, is how I really feel. Meaningful reform will not be possible without meaningful investigations and acknowledgement of what really happened.

Verified voting Lobby Day is on June 9th in Washington DC ! I wanted to support this action but I know most of us can't go to DC on a Thursday. I also wanted to call for voter fraud investigations.
Here is the beginning of the petiton;

"We the undersigned, endorse the following petition:
Support Verified Voting / Call for investigations
Target: Henry Waxman Committee on Govenrment Reform Minority Office

Petiton to support Verified Voting Lobby Day on June 9th,the Rush Holt Bill HR-550, and call for meaningful investigations of election fraud, in order to enable meaningful reform. ..... "

see http://www.verifiedvoting.org/ for more info.
I read Robert Koehler's "The Silent Scream of Numbers" and felt the need to do something more.
http://www.commonwonders.com/archives/col290.htm was also carried on commondreams.org
So I am also promoting the orange or (whatever) postcard campaign also to support the June 9th action.

although i understand what people are saying. there is a legal definition of what a ballot is, and it is not a receipt. i think a more vigorous audit for every election is what we really need, no matter what we count.

15. The Holt Bill is a step in the right direction...however...
we must demand more stringent auditing...and language that calls the ballot what it is. The only thing a DRE should be used for is marking a standard ballot that can be hand counted. Thermal paper trails are not adequate...open the door to cryptography...and are unacceptable.

If it does not say Voter Verified paper Ballots...it is not

Think how hard it would be to hand recount those thermal paper records. Having those would make a recount possible but highly unlikely.

Demand Paper Ballots. Count them however you want...but before you can count them you must have them.

Damn I hate that I am sick and having surgery...I can see my job is not finished so I have to get well. The educational phase has not totally ended I see.

17. Point Well Noted. I let the other thread die (or am trying anyway)
Plenty of folks getting too focused on the receipt. What I also want is far better auditing.

Didn't know this was a personal interest of yours. I guess I'll be paying more attention in future.

Like you say, HR 550 is a step in the right direction. I see little to overtly object to in the legislation. I would be happy to see it pass. As a step...

On top of that, it is active and getting behind it NOW can make some progress toward overall better auditing. I hope that people see it that way and take a few minutes to sign off on the petition.

Thanks for the info.

Now get some rest dammit and get well buddy!

You are a great asset on the front lines!
