Political party question
Does the "Liberal Democrat" party in the UK mean the same as Liberal Democrat in the states? Just wondering.

2. No
They are actually have their origin from two parties:

First, the old British Liberal Party, where liberal means moderate libertarian. Traditionally they stood for low taxes, little regulation, and high personal freedom.

The second party is the Social Democratic Party, or SDP, which consisted of disgruntled members of the right wing of the Labour Party who left the party in the 1980's.

The parties formed an alliance in the 1980's and were a centrist party then.

Now they tend to be all over the place. On some issues they are left-wing, and on some they are right-wing, and on others no one really knows where they stand.
