Sufferin' succotash - Sylvester had better stay home. A statewide vote in Wisconsin could pave the way for legally shooting stray cats there.
At county meetings throughout the state, voters approved a proposal by the Wisconsin Conservation Congress that called for feral cats to be designated "unprotected." If the Legislature agrees and declares stray cats a nuisance like skunks and possums, hunters with small-game licenses could shoot cats that appear to be wild: those without collars and acting in an unfriendly manner.

Minnesota and South Dakota already allow feral cats to be shot. Animal advocacy groups are yowling in protest.
"It's absolutely inhumane. It's cruel. It's completely barbaric to even have the idea of going out and shooting cats," said Jessica Frohman of Bethesda, Md.-based Alley Cat Allies. "Not only that, it's not going to work."
Both sides agree there are too many stray and feral cats, thanks to owners who abandon animals that then reproduce. The solution to overpopulation is trapping and neutering feral cats, then releasing or finding them homes, Frohman says.
