Ex-jail official drunk in court

The former head of the medical unit at the Santa Fe County jail was legally drunk when she testified about a jail-related case Monday in District Court, a judge and an attorney said Tuesday.

In addition, after being stopped by a sheriff's deputy on N.M. 14, Rose Bell, 48, had been booked into the same jail just two days before on charges of aggravated driving while intoxicated, having an open container of alcohol in her car and failing to stay in her lane.

Meanwhile, the defense attorney who subpoenaed Bell to explain why his incarcerated client allegedly isn't getting the medical treatment she needs said the incident Monday could be the reason. "Now I'm suspicious of what they've been doing down there," said Damian Horne. "Maybe she's been drunk on the job."

Efforts to reach Bell on Tuesday were not successful.
