(Breaking News) Jerry Falwell Taken Off Ventilator
Edited on Wed Mar-30-05 02:11 PM by DemocratSinceBirth
He's breathing on his own...

Got ya...

on edit- boy i'm i glad the editing period is not over... i am not hoping or praying for the Reverand Falwell's early demise... Given some of my "pro life" stances I have taken on this board that would make me a hyporcite..

i saw a trailer on cnn that said "Falwell breathing on his own" and a great pun was born...

things are so tense here a little laughter therapy is in order..

Peace

Brian

12. Oops! An opinion on religion has caused offense.
Edited on Wed Mar-30-05 02:02 PM by aeolian
Imagine that.

I'm offended by the very existence of organised religion, Judeo-christian monotheism in particular. And I find the leaders of such entities, especially of the Catholic church, to be destroyers of cultures, peoples, and thoughts the world over. But I guess I'm not allowed to voice that opinion.

tsk tsk indeed.

Let's defeat our opponents in the marketplace of ideas... Our energy is better spent there than it is in wishing for their demise...

Anyway we don't have much say over who stays and who goes unless some of us think we can channel evil spirits....

Edited on Wed Mar-30-05 02:33 PM by comsymp
given the tenets of Christianity and the claims of both these men to be leaders of the religion, wishing them death might actually be a good thing - y'know, entry into Heaven, an end to earthly suffering and all...

ON EDIT: What Dulce said

31. Not even an opinion on religion
but an opinion on two religious hucksters who have made a handsome living off the pennies of the poor.

Personally, I'd like to see both men humbled by their present circumstances into admitting they've been wrong about a lot of things. You can't kill an idea, but having the men who pushed some of those ideas the hardest repudiate the worst of them would be a start towards sanity among the faithful.

34. Yeah, not that bad at all
Even though his policies as the leader of the Catholic church in large part contribute to the deaths of *40,000* children who die every day in the developing world due to starvation, malnutrition and diseases related to same. All before they reach the age of *5*. Heaven forbid that families in those predominantly Catholic countries be allowed by his Holiness to use birth control so that the population boom goes bust. But no, apparently being pro-life for him means that the child must be born so that it can die an early, excrutiating death of hunger. And these kids even have their brains still intact, so they actually feel the hunger pains. All in the name of combatting the shrinking number of Catholics worldwide.

Great guy he is.

1. Nothing is below DU - belowness is subjective to the poster and the readers that agree with him.

2. They are evil bastards, either by intent or by ignorance. They affect some of our lives more than others on this board. They wish us harm.

You are right, this crap needs to stop . . .starting with them, but if they don't strike to begin with then we don't have to not turn the other cheek.

45. It is below DU
Democrats I like to think are caring people that won't spit on their enamies when they are down and I hope most of the DU is this way. This guy is an asshole, yes. If he recovers (which I pray he does) he will come back and continue to be an asshole, yes. They might do this to us if we were in that position, yes. However, that certainly doesn't make it justified. It is time to show we are better than this. I know most of you don't actually want him to die, however, you sure as hell make it seem that way which needs to stop. I am not saying we should all start sending him cards, I'm simply saying we should show someone that is in this condition a little respect even if he wouldn't do the same to us.

22. When Christians die
they get to be with Jesus and live happily ever after.
And we wish them all the best.

When heathens perish
they get to go to an everlasting barbecue
and so it is our duty to fight for their lives
until they see the error of their ways
and repent and become Chrsitians who go to heaven when they die.

Trying to Keep Falwell here is an insult to the man's faith. Furthermore,
it is a cruel and unsual punishment to prevent a man from entering paradise
by harnessing him to a metal contraption.
That treatment should be reserved for heathens
and those who have no hope of salvation.

44. Those of you who are squeamish...
...might want to adopt the Clarence Darrow solution:

"I have never wished for anyone to die. But I have occasionally read the obituaries with a smile."

Personally, in this case I'm still hoping for a relapse.

And the "lowest blow" I've seen in here is the one comparing us to Fred Phelps. I'm not standing outside Falwell's house taunting his family with obscene signs. I'm just stating my opinion that he's a waste of oxygen on a message board, with more-or-less like-minded people.

46. I don't want Falwell dead. Not at all.
What I want is to have one of the few remaining liberals in the press discover a dead girl or a live boy in his bed and completely destroy him. To show him up as the money-grubbing charlatan he is.

If Jerry Falwell dies, what happens? All of the liberals in America will lift a glass to his demise, maybe throw a party in his dishonor (and I guarantee that when Falwell does die, the wide-format printing industry will get rich running "Good Riddance to Bad Rubbish" banners), and then we'll forget him because we'll be fighting some other pseudochristian whacko.

But if Falwell goes down in disgrace, I believe the whole pseudochristianity industry will collapse. Falwell's no Christian. He's a tinhorn dictator who buys television makeup in gallon cans and who owns a really deluxe Bible that shows no evidence of ever having been opened.

With Falwell embarrassed, the real Christians, the ones who live by the teachings of Christ, will come to the forefront. The Atheist's Prayer ("Dear Lord, please save me from some of your followers") might slide into the obscurity it deserves. It might not, but I'm willing to take the chance.

49. *SIGH* It's not "given" your "pro-life" stances that you don't pray...
for his demise.

It's "given" that you don't advocate taking pleasure in the death of persons, no matter how vile, and given, say that you don't advocate murder.

That's completely compatible with not taking "pro-life" stances on various issues.

I resent the continued implication by many on this board and in the "real world" that people with "pro-choice" or "pro-autonomy" type positions on say abortion, assisted suicide etc. are somehow less respectful of life IN VIRTUE of their non-"pro-life" positions.

Nothing could be farther from the truth.
