Will Michael Schiavo end up being our Salman Rushdie?

I'm afraid that Terri is going to pass away soon, there is no way she can keep on in her already weakened state. And these people that are fighting alongside her parents are the worst kind of nutcases. I would not want to be him for anything in the world, because Terri's chapter will end soon, but he will be Michael Schiavo for the rest of his life. Randall Terry the Operation Rescue freak has already chimed in on this, and I'm sure that will bring all of the psychos out from under their rocks. If I were him I would change my name and/or leave the country.

I don't really get the comparison. Rushdie is an intellectual and a critic of the corruption in his culture. Michael Schiavo is simply a husband, albeit, now an infamous or famous depending on how one looks at it.

These people are working themselves up into quite an emotional frenzy, untempered by reason, and I'm not sure what they're going to do when she dies.

I hate this pop mass-hysteria shit. It's just like with Princess Di. Everybody uses it as an excuese to go gonzo drama-queen and wail and gnash teeth in large groups in front of television cameras. It's all so vapid and shallow and pathetic. And potentially dangerous.

For the rest of his life he's going to be a target for some nut with a gun seeking to "avenge Terri". And so are Judges Greer and Whittemore and his lawyer, Mr.Felos.

Hopefully it will never happen, but I have no doubt that there are people out there who, if they had the opportunity,wouldn't hesitate to commit violence on Michael.

That he persists in the face of the obvious risk that he is putting himself in is one of the facts that helps convince me of his sincerity.

The show "Without a Trace" which is one of the most liberal dramas on tv, did a show recently where they highlighted right to life groups. It was fiction, but it scared the hell out of me, it basically showed how secretive and conniving these violent groups have to be to operate, and how they network, and how far-reaching they are. It still gives me the creeps thinking about that show. In the end, one of the women who had participated in a clinic bombing (only loosely disguised as the one that killed a doctor and maimed a nurse) realized how wrong she was and started trying to turn herself in, so they strapped a bomb to her and were going to blow her up. I was an amazingly bold statement for this show to make, I don't know who writes it, but they even had the fictional nurse giving a speech, and her wounds from the bomb were horrendous, the make up was so realistic. I think that was so brave of this show, I haven't seen anything about abortion on tv since "If these Walls Could Talk" a few years back.

I really believe that the fundie wingnuts will be so mad that they did not get their way that they will do SOMETHING to stomp their feet and throw a tantrum.
