Are we being primed for a governmental shift to a theocratic state? Maybe this is a bit too far, but it certainly seems like there is a concerted push by the corporate media to reinforce Xtian fundamentalism. What purpose would this serve other than to cause revolutionary change to our system of government?

6. Forgot about those annual Rites of Spring...makes sense, I guess.
Nevermind the FACT that these Xtian holidays were instituted by the Council of Nicene in mid-300 AD to co-opt the pagan Rites of Spring that were MUCH MORE POPULAR among the Roman populace.

I guess it would be too much to ask that Time, Newsweek, MSGOP, and other media outlets to point out this fact.

The pagans picked a good Rites of Passage into Spring symbol indeed.

10. Demeter & Dionysus would approve. Greek prototypes for Mary & Jesus.
Xtian religion is nothing more than a recycling of Greek myth, but best not bring this up to the fundies...they're likely to explode.

11. I may be full of shit - but the Council did not want to include
Revelations in the New Testament. They feared religious nutjobs would interpret it the same way religious fundies are interpreting it these days.

As an aside - Revelations: The Television epic airs on April 13 on NBC I think. Tim LaHaye must be overjoyed.

2. Best to not
Question it - they might put you in the pillory, or burn you at the stake. Three hundred years of American history, and we're back to Salem ca. 1690.

Big type across the screen reading, "Why are the liberal elite against religion." (or words to that effect. They may have said "hate religion.") This was on a commercial during Countdown a couple of days ago.

16. Liberal Elite = code words for people who oppose their christofascist bull
Edited on Wed Mar-23-05 02:14 PM by AngryWhiteLiberal
Count me as a liberal elite if this means that I value SCIENCE; understand (or care to understand) the philosophical underpinnings of issues; use rational thought; and care more about following the spirit of Jesus' teachings than the fascist religous dogma running around these days.

Plus, why the FUCK WOULD WE CARE WHAT A MURDERING SCUMBAG cares about us? Scarborough, what a joke.

15. What Their Pollsters Say...$$$$$
These companies are always polling and doing research to see what they can print or view that's gonna get sales and readers/viewers. The "conventional wisdom" was that many people voted last year on "faith-based" issues (codeword: xtian) and these vultures have swooped in to rake in the cash by manipulating this story as they do with everything else.

My channel selector can't get away faster from these holier-than-thou hypocrites who support such an immoral regime.

The real problem is the right wing has such a powerful, coordinated media/propaganda operation it's hard to outshout or outreason it. There's nothing being done by Democrats to counter this noise and no coordination or cooperation between alternative media to give voice to the millions of us who are offended by all this regime does and stands for.

18. We used to have a way to counter the problems...it was called EDUCATION
There's a notable (probably even statistically significant) inverse relationship between the rise of Repuke christofascism and declining educational standards in America. Educated people tend not to believe in nonsensical religious bullshit or at least have the capacity for critical thinking (something lacking these days).

23. Religion Loves Ignorance
Look at the countries where the church has/had the most influence and you'll see high illteracy rates, extreme poverty and the worst cases of human rights abuses...all in the name of "god".

I heard that goofy Alabama Judge the other night attempt to distinguish that there was a xtian god who was different than the Budhist one...and millions who believe that somehow this is a "Xtian" nation...which is is not.

Religion answers questions that can't be answered...it gives certainty where none exists (even if that flies in the face of reality) and demands total submission. It can't work in a society where people are taught to think for themselves and live in a rational manner.

The religious right detests our public school system since they can't control or pervert it. They hate teachers that they can't intimidate or control and they consider any dissent to be "unpatriotic" and "non-xtian"...powerful stuff for sheeple who want to be accepted.

Organized religion and fundamentalistic belief are a bastardization of the true beauty taught by many of the great moral and social justice thinkers.

25. Did you see the Newsweek cover?
The title is (by memory): "How Jesus became Christ"? For Christians, hasn't the issue of Jesus' divinity been settled for, oh, 1800 years or so??? I wonder how this qualifies as breaking news.

The author of that piece, J Meacham (again from memory) is a hack of a writer who attempts to write secular pieces on religion. Judging from his prose, he's a diehard believer who barely manages a veneer of secularism on his pieces. That's all fine and dandy, but for a non-religious publication you'd think they'd find someone either less biased or better at writing, or at least edit the damn stories a little to not be barely disguised proselytizing.
