Drudge: WH studies $4 Gallon 'Nightmare' Scenario
http://www.drudgereport.com/flash3gp.htm

President Bush's inner circle has become preoccupied with soaring gas prices and its toll on the economy, a well-placed White House source said over the weekend.

Bush has quietly asked for a review of any and all economic fallout on the nation if gas prices continuing racing up and over the psychological line of $3 a gallon, as they have in recent weeks in some locations, the source explains.

Bush's top economic advisers have conveyed to the president that a "nightmare" scenario of $4 a gallon is extremely unlikely in the short term.

"The seasonal run-up of gas prices has been tough this year, but like every year in the past two decades, we expect we will will see some easing," the source claims from Washington.

4 More years of hell! Thanks Kool-aid drinkers, hope your big-ass SUV's and Hemi-Pickups can run on Bush Kool-aid.

26. they tried that once.......
for those of you too young to remember, back in the late 70's when gas jumped over the $1.00 mark. The pumps at that time were mechanical an only had 3 digits for the price.....2 for the cents and 1 for the 9/10ths. They had to switch to liters till they replaced all the pumps with digital displays, it caused a lotta confusion, even at a time when we were talking of going metric.

Hasn't brought life in Europe to a grinding halt, that I've noticed.

 They are quite far ahead of the US in so many ways.

24. We don't have a train system to use
At least not in most of the country. And the pitiful remnants of Amtrak are being dismantled by the Repugs.

I live in the far edges of the Pittsburgh suburbs. In 1930 when our house was built, there was a train stop within walking distance. From this stop, you could take a narrow-gauge train into town, from there you could take a train into Pittsburgh, and from Pittsburgh you could take a train anywhere in the country. Now we need a car to get anywhere.

13. that is Europe where the ordinary working stiff has a much
stronger social safety net available to him and, if I am not mistaken, a much better public transportation system.

Gas in Palm Beach County this morning = 2.15 to 2.17 per gallon regular.

For minimum wage workers who must drive to get to work this is devastating. It won't take much more in the way of increases for it to reach 1/2 of their hourly income. These folks literally cannot afford to take this hit to their miserly incomes. In Palm Beach County I can tell you that the public transportation system is very poor and really not an option for most who work.

23. You are correct. European public transport kicks some serious ass.
But this is in general. Certain countries have better transportation system than others, i.e. the Netherlands being better than the UK.

20. It's been like this forever. I feel that making comparisons
between European and US gas prices are pointless. Most of the price of European gas is made up of taxes. European cars have better mileage, public transportation is much better, and the societies have become used the fact that it's expensive to operate a car. I know literally dozens of people who have the money to buy a car, but they don't because it's too expensive to operate. A friend of mine from Sweden bought a pretty good car for 1000 euros, and is selling it after only 6 months because it's too expensive to operate. She's now going by bike almost everywhere.

Europeans know that driving a car is expensive, it's just going to get more expensive and they know/accept that. Americans think that driving was/should be cheap. I think that the US will adapt, it'll just be very unpleasant for a while. Once consumers start scrambling to buy fuel-efficient cars and gas-hog SUV sales die off, the manufacturers will start making more of them and better ones.

2. The review is to find ways for the BFEE to profit from $4/gallon gas.
Also to deal with the political fallout. I guarantee you it's not to help the American people.

6. Effect. Chimpy? EFFECT?!
I got your effect right here, hangin':

Every time that price goes up, and as it gets closer to the magic $3.00 plateau(I think that $2.50 is the breakpoint, but that is just me...), your popularity and approval takes another step towards the tank. Why? People are getting it. People are getting you and your bunch of energy pirates. People are getting the misdirection. Sure, not everyone.

Yet.

But more every day.

Welcome to the law of unintended effects.
