10. That's correct
The latest of a series of failed attempts by IBM to re-enter the personal computer market that it helped start. Remember Alantra? Alero? Or was it Alegis? Or was that an airline that changed its name back later, or some kind of little peasant car? Whatever.

IBM's last real breakthrough in personal or desktop business computing was the Micro-Channel Architecture or MCA bus, which was interesting but turned into a dead end fast. There were a couple of versions of OS/2 that looked promising for a while but that died rightfully as well.

The Chinese will probably do a better job. Thumbs up.

4. They sold part of IBM to a Chinese company -- approved a couple days ago
Here's a news article: http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?storyID=7858409&type=technologyNews

A U.S. security committee's approval of IBM's sale of its personal computer business to China's Lenovo Group Ltd. was widely expected, but future deals could face tougher scrutiny, experts and lawmakers said on Wednesday.

The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) gave the $1.25 billion deal its unanimous consent on Tuesday, executives from the two firms said. The merger will create the world's third largest PC maker.

"Concern about technology transfer to China is a fair question that we are going to see more of, but this was not a good case to have a fight over," said Bill Reinsch, president of the National Foreign Trade Council, a group which lobbies for rules-based free trade.

...
CFIUS -- composed of 11 U.S. agencies, including members of the U.S. departments of Treasury, State, Defense, Justice and Homeland Security -- in January extended its probe of the deal for 45 days after lawmakers raised concerns about the transfer of advanced technology to the Chinese government.

7. U.S. Clears IBM Sale to Lenovo
China's Lenovo Group Ltd. won clearance from a U.S. national security oversight committee to acquire IBM Corp.'s personal computer business, the companies said Wednesday, overcoming resistance from some U.S. lawmakers.

An IBM executive said the high-level U.S. committee had given the deal its unanimous consent — the final external approval needed — putting the $1.25-billion PC sale on track to close in the second quarter as originally planned.

8. They
Sold thier PC division to a CHinese company so that company can sell in Asia and compete better against Dell. From what I heard, the CHinese company ill still slap IBM logos on the PCs but I could be wrong.

18. Chinese govt will own 46 percent, but HQ will be in the US, in Armonk NY,
at least initially. Since IBM will own 19 percent, and the remaining 35 percent will be publicly-traded stock, how would eventual majority ownership by the Chinese government be staved off?

they sold their PC business to a Chinese company.

And a smart move it was, too. HP, are you paying attention?
