***Victory in Virginia*** Right wing attack on Thos. Jefferson fails!
Don't mess with Thomas Jefferson or George Mason in Virginia

That's the news. The right-wing Republican who sought to touch the Virginia Constitution was shot down quicker than an incoming bi-plane attacking an aircraft carrier. In Virginia, the Constitution is out of reach, even in Republican controlled times, because it was authored by George Mason and Thomas Jefferson. Falwell tried this stunt in the 1980's and was smacked down even quicker.

This shows that even in a Republican controlled legislature, there are limits.

The PentaPost actually did it's job on this issue today. Wonderful read.

Religious Freedom Revisions Rejected
Va. Senate Panel Kills Amendment

By Rosalind S. Helderman
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, February 22, 2005; Page B01

RICHMOND, Feb. 21 -- A Senate committee spent two hours Monday debating what Virginia's founders intended when they wrote about religious freedom two centuries ago before soundly rejecting a proposal to expand on their words.

<snip>

The Senate Courts of Justice Committee voted 10 to 5 to reject a proposed constitutional amendment that would have explicitly recognized the right to pray on public property, including schools.

<snip>

"Having survived 219 years of honored Virginia tradition, can we really improve on the language of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison?" asked Sen. John S. Edwards (D-Roanoke).

WE NEED TO START USING THE FOUNDING FATHERS...THE RIGHT WITHERS IN THEIR PRESENCE.

1. Scary to think they would even try.
Encouraging that this bunch of morons with their own little version of history were so readily turned away when trying to rewrite real history. It still worries me, though, because they will keep trying, and if they ever make any inroads, it will be the tip of the iceberg, the first of many steps in the creation of a theocracy.

3. It is scary but this was dispatched in 2 hours!
I think that they feared a public uprising here. Jefferson is more revered than Jesus in VA. CYA

2. Virginia lawmakers...
... are doggedly determined to make the Old Dominion the utter laughingstock of the nation. How pathetic that the home of Washington and Jefferson would be inherited by such a pack of small-minded losers. Every time the name Virginia pops up on the news these days it's because that collective hive of morons in Richmond have come with some new law or proposal even more draconian or outrageous as the one before.

Virginians, in the name of honor, decency and sanity, y'all need to CLEAN HOUSE!!

4. We are!
...and don't forget our latest shining moment, defeat of the anti-thong legislation. Oh yeah, they wanted to ban thongs and have police give a $50 ticket when they spotted one. Problem was the police would have to turn themselves in to child protection services for looking (the cops hated this idea). It went down real quick.

This is the first Republican controlled legislature since in over 100 years. Thank God we have Gov. Warner, a very smart Democrat!

Your sympathies and advice are accepted.
