Fight back - tag a gas-guzzling urban assault vehicle.
Edited on Sun Feb-13-05 09:59 AM by paineinthearse
A couple weeks back while in BU's student union lobby I noticed a bank of pay phones. Afixed to each handpiece was a sticker that read "CAUTION, WIRETAPPED - courtesy of the US Patriot Act". Brilliant, and a highly effective way of raising the collective awareness.

Yesterday in another thread a member recounted her experience of being verbally assaulted in a parking lot by a suburban housewife-type driving a very large SUV. The reason? She had a Kerry Edwards bumper sticker on her small vehicle.

I think it is time to strike back.

I'm open to other ideas, but here is mine. It's a little over the top, but I'd still categorized it as civil disobediance.

On any qualifying urban assault vehicle or pick-up that is displaying a * or pro-war bumper sticker, place OVER THE * / FREEPER STICKER a bumper sticker conveying information about service members killed in Iraq. Each would have a photo, name, home town, birth date, date killed, & location. Underneath ..."was KILLED FOR OIL". Is anyone in the bumper sticker business or know a blue-friendly business?

I welcome your comments and ideas.

p.s. Copyright PitA. I claim all profits from the proceeds, and pledge to give 100% to DU and charitable veterans' organizations.

1. Cool but I think it can be considered vandalism ...
... and if one gets caught tagging, they'll have a litigation-happy Freeper on their hands.

5. It's still vandalism.
Edited on Sun Feb-13-05 10:04 AM by WillowTree
It's someone else's personal property. Pass out handbills if you want, but affixing something to someone else's car without their permission could bag you more trouble than you want.

Honest.

12. Many cities also have rgulations about "papering" cars
Check out your local laws before you do anything. Doesn't do anyone any good for you to be fined or plunked in jail.

Consider tagging or papering your own car.

"This car gets ____ per gallon. What does your SUV get?"

"I support the troops by driving a fuel efficient vehicle"

Short and sweet and positive.

A small SUV that gets better milage than most cars! (can you tell what I'm saving up for?)

But sounds like an idea.

6. The pay phone stickers are brilliant
because they are not directed at any one person, but at the Patriot Act. One reason why liberals have gotten such a bad reputation is that we are scolds. We constantly criticize People who don't agree with us.

I would like to someday be able to convince some of those you propose to target that Bush and his programs is bad for America and get them to vote with us. Once you slap a nasty bumper sticker on an individual's vehicle, you've made an enemy. I know how I would react if a Freeper slapped a bumper sticker on my car that claimed my Kerry bumper sticker meant I was traitor or something like that. It would redouble my anger toward Republicans and I would work even harder for their defeat.

We've got to stop targeting individuals and concentrate on explaining why our position on issues makes more sense.

13. I see your point
I see DU as a collective stream-of-thought vehicle. Perhaps individual "attacks" are wrong.

I do like the "parking ticket" idea further down the thread.

The color (orange) itself is a reminded of the terror alert scale.

7. Print out fliers that look like parking tickets and place them under the
windshield wiper. Then you cannot be charged with vandalizing a car...

You could also have a list of "infractions" on the ticket and tick off the appropriate infraction just like on a traffic ticket.

Example:

- driving a well-known gas guzzling car

- supporting the troops in word, but not deed by
a) driving a gas guzzler
b) supporting the troops while also supporting an
administration who is cutting veterins pay, troop pay,
forcing wounded vets to pay for their meals while in
the hospital, underpaying troops, ending insurance
benefits for soldiers 30 days after discharge...

- displaying a bumper sticker which supports the Bush
Administration which has gutted the Bill of Rights.

- Whatever other infractions you can think of.

and so on and so forth.

The "penalty" could be a suggested donation to a charity that helps the troops reenter society when they come home with job search aid, support for seriously ill or wounded vets, any counseling needed for the vet and his/her family to cope with the ravages of service, etc.

9. How about moving their ribbon magnets?
I love the idea of moving "support the troops" ribbon magnets onto the gas tank lid. No vandalism, very subtle, but I think for anyone with a brain, highly effective.

11. Do Unto Others, eh?
Don't mess with their vehicles if you don't want them messing with yours. Especially don't be removing or moving things from their car unless you want a fist-fight in the parking lot.

Don't engage in vandalism. It's not civil disobedience when you target a private individual.

Leaflets are the way to go here. And I wouldn't make them look too much like your town's parking tickets, either. I seem to recall some cases where that could get you some official attention. Of course, if you want official attention, that's your business.

15. Vandalism isn't a good approach
I don't anything close to vandalism is a good approach. I don't even like the idea of placing "parking tickets" on SUVs.

I hate SUVs and think they're virtually immoral, but I think those kinds of tactics alienate people rather than enlightening them.

16. Yesterday, my son tried to start a savings account. He is 18.
They would not let him start one because he diden't have a drivers license. He has a permit and a picture student ID.

I had to put my name on the account(I did not want to) in order for him get the account but he can only make deposits, not withdrawls.

All in the name of the patriot act.

29. He should have a picture as his permit
Most states give out ids with the permits or the permit itself is an id. In any case, you can get your son an id if it is going to take a while to get a licence.

18. Don't forget: MANY people got a huge tax deduction just for buying SUVs!
That's right! IMO, that's one main reason we've seen the proliferation of these giant plastic SUV wastes-of-styrofoam on every road. They sure as hell didn't buy SUVs to save on gas! No--it was a HUGE tax deduction! Go to a tax site and read all about it!

See, encouraging people to buy these gas-guzzling vehicles resulted in... ta-da! More profits for the oil companies! Now who do we know in government who might benefit from THAT? Hmmm... the entire Bush administration?

23. Like mine? I have a Kerry-Edwards sticker on my SUV
I have kids and YES I have an SUV and live in a suburb!!! I also don't commute to work everyday because I can work at home, since we own our own business.

I do NOT like the idea of putting stickers on someone else's car. Some PRICK did that to my SUV and I was pissed that he tampered with my private property. He put a BUSH-CHENEY sticker on my bumper at Lowe's and my husband drove around all day with it before he noticed it.

I do however like the idea of flyers on certain cars IF it is legal in your area.

One group has citations to issue to Congress Reps for their infractions. I like this concept.

PLEASE DO NOT ASSUME THAT IF IT IS A SUV, THE PERSON IS A REPUKE. Many of my DEMOCRAT friends have SUVs.

Edited on Sun Feb-13-05 04:51 PM by Kingshakabobo
I'm not one hundred percent sure but I'm pretty sure it was anti SUV vandalism. I've had one of those phony "tickets" placed on my SUV as well.

I use the vehicle for work and volunteering so it pisses me off beyond belief that someone would be so mean and ignorant to vandalize a total stranger's personal property without knowing the full story.

People who will vandalize a strangers property are scum. Just like the people who scratched "fag" in my good (straight) friends from Oregon's minivan because they had a bumper sticker speaking out against the ant-gay marriage amendment in the Nov. election.

22. I have been the victim of this type of street justice
Of course my vandals were Christians reacting to my atheist bumper stickers. Its wrong. Its directed against a single individual. It will fail to make its point because you have harmed them.

Now pamphlets under the wiper (ticket like and other creative types) make a good message.

Also going after corporate advertisement (though illegal) is more in keeping with the notion of battling for our society against the corporate overlords.

We will not win over anyone by attacking individuals.

It neither impressed nor amused me.

It was intriguing, since at that time I had no stickers on the car or any visible indication of my political affiliation.
