Laura's Anti-Gang Initiative(?????)
I saw this interview on the PBS Newshour last week, and was baffled. I found the written interview this morning. Here is the link, and a couple of snips:

http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/white_house/jan-june05/lbush_02-10.html

<snip>
LAURA BUSH: Well, actually, I think it started because I was already interested in boys. I'd gotten this - read this article in the New York Times Magazine and then just started investigating the statistics about boys.

And, you know, I would just come across one in the newspaper and another and another - something that I read - and the statistics are pretty alarming. Girls are going to college much more than boys, about 57 percent of the graduating class last year of bachelor's degrees were women, which shows that fewer boys are going to college.

<snip>

and so I really wanted to make an effort to focus all of our attention, for Americans to focus their attention, on boys for a few years to see if we can help them build successful lives.
<end snip>

A couple of things bother me about this. One is the emphasis on boys "for the next few years."

Another is the whole interview. This was a chance for her to really push her agenda. Other than finding out what programs are already out there and bolstering them (like existing mentoring programs), what else are they doing here?

Anyway, I thought it was a confusing interview. I don't fault her for wanting to help, but I am just not sure what they are doing?????

2. Besides which...
What experience does Laura have with helping boys "build successful lives?" Clearly her influence was insufficient to make the boy-king successful in anything he did that wasn't bought and paid for by someone else.

it sounded sooOOOO creepy, like child sex-abuse....and with NO sons, how the hell does pickles become such an 'expert' in raising boys....and her 'raising' of her daughters leaves a LOT to be desired (public displays of drunkenness, drugs, arrests AND convictions for drinking and real slutty appearances on the WORLD stage...her daughters don't even know how to dress properly)

8. Poor kids look terrified of her!
I know it's just PR for the Bush administration, but it really just seems like a joke.

9. "Passport to Manhood"
"We want to show an ideal of manhood that respects life and rejects violence," said Mrs. Bush. Is her husband going to be the poster boy for that?

God, what an absolute convoluted mess ** makes of everything he and his evil minions touch. Perhaps Laura's heart's in the right place. I think she must have lost her mind long ago. ** can do that to ya.
