Thatcher house-hunting in Cape Town
Thatcher house-hunting in Cape Town
Helen Bamford

Mark Thatcher's luxury nine-bedroom Constantia mansion has been sold and Thatcher, who arrived back in Cape Town this week, is looking for another house in the city.

Mike Greeff, chief executive of Greeff Properties, said he was not at liberty to disclose the price paid for Thatcher's house, but Weekend Argus learned reliably that it was close to R20-million.

Thatcher returned to South Africa three days ago and he is due to answer questions from Equatorial Guinea prosecutors about an alleged coup plot in the oil-rich west African country next Friday, his lawyer told Sapa.

Greeff confirmed that he had instructions from Thatcher to look for another property for him. The son of former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher left SA last month after receiving a suspended four-year sentence and a fine of R3-million in a plea bargain on charges that he bankrolled the coup plot in Equatorial Guinea.

1. Times:Thatcher's luck turns as house sale raises £1.4m

By Our Foreign Staff

SIR MARK THATCHER’S house in the well-heeled Cape Town suburb of Constantia has been sold after five months on the market for the highest price reached in the area.

Mike Greeff, of Greeff Properties, which handled the sale, said: “It was a record price for a property in Constantia, there were many interested buyers and I had been negotiating for the last few days.”

The details have not been disclosed but Mr Greeff said that the 1,500sq m (16,140sq ft) house, which has a thatched roof, had been bought by the Sahara Group.

Sahara is known internationally as a cricket sponsor; it backs Newlands in Cape Town and other cricket grounds around South Africa.
