The devil's-tail shape nose, the petty belligerant scowl. The look of a petulant ugly little child right before throwing a tantrum.

Here it is blown up, from MCM's book:

13. "petulant ugly little child " ? Why demonize children and equate them to W
Children, by nature, are innocent beings. Those that have behavioral problems are victims of poor parenting or have unaddressed conditions. This is the fault of ADULTS. Children are not inherently bad or evil. That is such a puritanical and fundie like attitude to project about children. They are victims in this society because selfish, greedy adults fail them.

Bush is an adult and should know better. He has been handed privilege on a silver platter yet refuses to be socially responsible. THAT is evil!

1. I never said kids were "inherently bad". Have you never seen children wear the face bush is wearing in that photo???!! I see that face in kids at least monthly in shops.

2. "Nature" vs "Nurture" is a very long-standing disagreement between experts, which has nothing whatsoever to do w my post.

3. You're not trying to say children by the age of 5 and upwards can't be evil, are you? Coz there are many many many examples to prove they certainly can be.

4. bush is evil; his actions are evil. We agree on that. ;)

20. children aren't evil
I do not associate that word with children and the attitude I have seen around here, by some, about children is really disturbing to me. It was the prevaling attitude pre children's rights. Considering the Humane Society for animals was created PRE any children's rights laws, we should be alarmed when we see a transgression in this area. Just as we are seeing a regressin of attitudes about women and women's rights.

This punitive attitude is regressive. Children are either taught by their parents, ADULTS, how to behave properly or learn after they become adults. Can children be blamed or called evil if they have behavior problems? I think not. Adults are to blame. Children do not possess the critical reasoning skills that adults do and not until they are in their late teens can they engage in conventional reasoning. This is not just my oppinion, but based on the work of reputable researchers, such as Kohlberg.

I usually agree with your posts and find them to be very entertaining and enlightened, but I have to disagree with you on this one. I have a different view of children and ADULTS.

21. And at what age do you think they become evil? 18? Or 21 in states
Edited on Fri Feb-11-05 03:00 PM by LynnTheDem
and nations that set the "adult" age to 21?

Of course children can be evil. I knew right from wrong by the time I was 5, didn't you?

And by the way, I was orphaned as a young child of 11 and lived on my own until I was an adult & married at 28. My parents didn't teach me jack about jack. But I still knew right from wrong. And there are thousands of very good parents who have murdering raping children.

Anyhoo, again 2 things here; I am not an expert on the "nature vs nurture" argument that EXPERTS still argue on, so you're as entitled to your inexpert opinion as I am to mine and 2) my OP had NOTHING whatsoever to do with "children being/not being evil"!

I said BUSH'S FACE has the look of a petulant ugly little child right before throwing a tantrum.

And he does, and there is not a human being over the age of 10 on this planet who hasn't seen such a look on the face of a child.

23. No, children are not evil
Granted, some children do have behavioral problems, this is not evilnees.

Futhermore, children do have cognitive limits. Ever hear of Kohlberg? (Preconventional, conventional, and post conventional reasoning).

Or child development? Or nueropsychology and brain development?

Children's brains are not fully developed until their late teens. If they have behavior problems, some ADULT has failed them.

Actually, I was a very well behaved child as are my children. In part, because my parents didn't view us as evil ones that need to be punished, but as children that deserved to be taught.

You lived on your own at age 11? How did you eat and pay the rent?

w the OP; don't want us to get in trouble w the admins! I suppose they'd just delete or warn us tho, not just ban us.

As I said, I'm not an expert on the "nature vs nuture" subject, and there are as many experts who disagree with you as agree. I have my own personal opinion, as you have yours, and our personal opinions are diametrically opposed.

That's fine with me. :)

My parents for the 11 years I had them didn't view children at all. We wer to be seen (rarely) and not heard. Period.

I lived on my own since 11, yep. The government paid a monthly amount for my apartment rent and food until I graduated high school at 16 going on 17 that October. No one even bothered to check my apartment to make sure it was safe or even really existed. No one signed off on my school report cards, but the school knew I was on my own. Bonus or what! No being grounded for bad marks, lol! Actually I never had any bad marks, which totally ruins having such a bonus. Luckily for me, I wasn't someone in need of much adult supervision, coz from 11 onwards, I pretty much got zero of it.

I had a good time though thru those years, with many good schoolfriends who had very kind & caring parents who ensured I didn't totally starve. I also had the best gr. 12 university-prep English teacher around, whose son happened to be the drummer for the group Harlequin, and who constantly invited me to dinner with his family in the hopes I'd hit it off with his son, lol! Didn't happen other than being friends and I got into concerts free. :D

After I graduated high school, the govt told me that's it I was on my own own. So I worked full time days, put myself thru full time university at night, got 3 degrees, got married, moved to Europe for over a decade, and am now here in Nowhere, Texas.

This was almost 30 years ago; many kids easily slipped thru the cracks back then. I was one of them. Probably a good thing. At any rate, I turned out fine; kept my nose clean, never been in trouble, good education, good friends, great hubby. :)

Stats said I'd be a drug-addicted hooker by 16, dead by 21. Heh. Ornery librul, me. ;) :D

30. how did you have an apartment at the age of 11?
cuz somehow that seems...wrong...wouldn't they have placed you in a foster home?

ps: i'm not judging or anything, it just seems weird that they would leave a kid to live on their own, without parental support (besides the parents of friends)...it's awesome that you got through tho!

31. The govt asked me what did I want to do
I said I wanted to go to school X (the school I had, 2 years previously, gone to on wkends for orchestra rehersals) and that I wanted to live close to that school.

I was told to "find a place and bring the rental agreement" to them for signing. And that's what I did.

As I said, we're talking 30 years ago where it was pretty easy to fall through the cracks. I was one of the lucky ones, I figure. :)

If they had forced me into foster care or a group home, then I would not have turned out very well at all, I suspect. Even before then I was very independant and as I'd never had parental support other than food and a roof over my head, it wasn't something I suddenly needed, and to have had it forced onto me or strangers trying to act as my parents...no that wouldn't have set well with me at all.

I got through it with very few problems, and had a darn good time and mostly good memories. :)

36. That's an amazing story!
I agree, an 11 year old would not be allowed to live on their own these days.

As I said, I enjoy your posts and agree with most of what you write, but respectfully disagree about children being evil. Most experts do not agree that kids are evil, btw. We can just agree to disagree! I don't think it would be appropriate for me to post info on that in this thread.

It's great to hear that things turned out so well for you. Congrats on your accomplishments!
