Top Marine General's Blunt Comments Draw Fire

At a panel discussion in San Diego Tuesday, a top Marine general tells an audience that, among other things, it is "fun to shoot some people."

The comment, made by Lt. Gen. James Mattis, came in reference to fighting insurgents in Iraq. He went on to say, "Actually, its a lot of fun to fight. You know, it's a hell of a hoot. I like brawling."

"You go into Afghanistan, you got guys who slap women around for 5 years because they didn't wear a veil," Mattis continued. "You know, guys like that ain't got no manhood left anyway. So it's a hell of a lot of fun to shoot them."

About 200 people gathered for the discussion, held at the San Diego Convention Center. While many military members laughed at the comments, a military expert interviewed by NBC 7/39 in San Diego called the comments "flippant."

"I was a little surprised," said Retired Vice Adm. Edward H. Martin. "I don't think any of us who have ever fought in wars liked to kill anybody."

Mattis also discussed operational tactics of the war, calling on military members not to underestimate the capacity of terrorists.

Mattis leads Camp Pendleton's 1st Marine Division in Iraq. He is in charge of the Marine Corps combat development and is based in Quantico, Va.

1. I read abou this here on DU
but saw it on CNN and MSNBC today.

The Marine General was "counselled" about his language.

His ass should be canned! End of story!!!

He is not fit to lead anybody.

3. Oh--so it was THAT asshole!
I've been pissed off at him for a LONG time:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/plaidder/04/23.html

He's the guy who defended the Makr-al-Deeb wedding bombing, where we killed 40 people who had gone out to attend a wedding, by saying that it was "naive" to think that this gathering was a wedding and not a gang of terrorists plotting because people don't have weddings in the middle of the desert, even if, you know, that's where they LIVE.

@#$!,

The Plaid Adder

4. Unfortunately, this isn't
unusual. I've got 2 sons in Special forces and this type of mentality is pervasive among soldiers.

7. If I was a person that liked to throw around the word "evil"
this statement, and the reality that it demonstrates about war and about human nature, would certainly qualify.

I don't go around calling people evil, but other people do, and they're mostly republicans. I wonder what the "values" conservatives are saying about Mattis's comment.

8. The difference between a vigilante and a hero:
A hero wishes he didn't have to be the hero.
A vigilante is a thug that just happens not to side with the enemy.

9. The chain of command.
It is a direct result of the top leadership in this administration, pure and simple. This just makes me sick.
