Pentagon Ban on Filming Coffins Defied
Agence France-Presse, Thursday 13 January 2005, 10:08

A US National Guard unit has defied a Pentagon request that sought to stop television news crews filming six flag-draped soldiers' coffins arriving in Louisiana.

The Pentagon has barred US media from filming the coffins of US service members arriving at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware.

But the Louisiana National Guard allowed a CBS news crew on Wednesday to film the arrival of six soldiers' coffins at the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base in Belle Chasse, near New Orleans, Louisiana.

Despite the Pentagon request, Lieutenant-Colonel Pete Schneider, a spokesman for the Louisiana National Guard told CBS: "What we thought was, we're going to do what the family asked us to do."

13. Thank you so much. I'm not surprised it happened in Louisiana.

Good job!

Louisiana is a nation outside of the US. I'm proud to have lived there and I will love it and the people to my dying day. People of Louisiana love nothing more than their history and good food, whoops I forgot, and music. All are equals.

Pentagon and its bizarre edicts. When you think about it-- their ban on filming soldiers' coffins is outrageous!! We've turned into such a police state.

God, what I wouldn't give for a full-scale revolt by the media.

Thanks for posting this. My heart goes out to this family and every family that has suffered these terrible losses. And the Pentagon actually BANS our media from filming the caskets. Those bastards-- how cold can you be??

Maybe thumbing one's nose at the Pentagon will catch on.

6. It is outrageous that we cannot honor these young men and women
who gave their lives in bush's illegal and immoral war. Does bush think he's sheltering us, protecting our sensibilities, protecting the privacy of families? .. I hazard a guess that it's none of those .. It's to keep us from hating him more for what he's doing. The old 'outta sight outta mind" mentallity. HE should be made to stand guard as every single coffin is brought off of a carrier. HE should be signing letters to parents and loved ones. HE should have to go with families to identify bodies .... ok I'm ranting .. but dammit HE is responsible.

Rest in peace men and women. I didn't want you over there, and I'm sorry you paid the ultimate price.

8. Every single one coming home in a coffin should be aired coast to coast.
These people who've given their lives fighting in *'s war deserve at least that much respect.

I'm really glad they honored these soldiers and their families, even if they only represent a small fraction of those who've died.

10. I agree, the homecoming should be a public ceremony
The fallen soldiers were public servants and their homecoming should be honored with a public homecoming ceremony. If the family chooses to have a seperate private family funeral, so be it.

Bush is HIDING the horrors of war by not allowing this; sanitizing and censoring PUBLIC INFO.

11. What right does he have to ask them to Honor and Serve
When they are not honored for giving their very lives?

Yes, they should have a public homecoming. It's really not too much to expect.

By not honoring these soldiers he succeeds in fogging the human cost of the war in the minds many Americans. It also succeeds in showing the lack of respect this country has for it soldiers. Eventually, I believe, the latter will exceed the former. Then you will hear of more stories such as this one.
