1. They rule only if the product can make money....
....but can't MicroSoft run rings around Apple Mini for even less money (Dell or Gateway PC with WindowsXP for just $499.00). There was a time when Henry Ford dominated the automobile market by bringing out his famous Model T for under $500.00 in the 1920's.

7. You can use it with any monitor, mouse, and keyboard with a usb port
It's tiny, being able to carry around your computer is awesome.

I think I'll take a mac, since they rarely crash and they have no need for all the spyware, since apples never get viruses.

Microsoft is a dinosaur, mac is the future of computers.

....according to its fan base. And 20 years later its still owns basically a niche in the market at approximately 3% of the market.

29. Is this true?!
I've been reading about the mini mac. I'm ready to convert, but I was wondering about this. I have an awesome keyboard and a flat screen that I love, and I would like to keep using them. If that is possible, I think I'll go buy one! Do you need adapters, or do these things just plug in?

Apple's no different than the rest of corporate america. (for more details, I've other responses that go into much greater detail... but the thing is a ripoff, and I also had a field day mentioning how few people bothered to look at the product's specs while blindly praising Apple for a low-cast Mac... :eyes: )

35. People have been asking for a stripped down Mac for years
Now that Apple is selling one, everybody complains because it's too stripped down.

A lot of people already have monitors and keyboards that they are happy with. No sense in upgrading what doesn't need to be upgraded.

I do think they should include more RAM. What they give will run OSX, but not very well.

4. Their stock going up has little to do with the mini Mac and much to do
with iPod.

Also, had they not released a PC version of the iPod but stuck with their original Mac only version like they started with, odds are their stock would be tanking.

PS - The mini mac is pretty cool, not enough machine for me, but I would have no problems recommending it to others.

16. Read this and weep. GORE IS A PHONY.
http://www.computertakeback.com/bad_apple/bad_apple_biz.cfm

Millions of people bought or received iPods digital music players this holiday season. The iPods contain toxics like lead and other harmful chemicals that are associated with infertility and brain damage. And because Apple has designed the iPod so that consumers cannot easily replace the batteries, consumers will either have to pay Apple a hefty fee to replace them or throw the used up iPods in the trash, ending up in landfills where the iPods will leak their poisons into our communities through the water and air. Some will be shipped overseas to China, India or Africa for metal recovery where poor children sifting through the trash will be poisoned with their toxics. (I added the emphasis)

Yes, I just posted this. But it's so significant, it's damn well worth mentioning twice.

11. Well, there are a thousand million Linux distros... none of which
costs $2000, unlike that Mac you want to get.

And that's $2000 just for the hardware YOU might find usable. Now add in the cost of software...

Sorry. Linux is here. It's much lower cost in a distro (no to mention that a distro comes with a TON of usable applications to go along with the OS), and if you had the time it wouldn't cost you a penny.

If you get a Mac, or Linux, or whatever else, I will say this blanket statement: Look before you leap.

31. My desktop PC runs Linux...
my laptop runs Linux and my PDA is a Sharp Zaurus. I started using Linux in 1994 (Slackware 1.1). I've been completely Windows free since RedHat 6.1, with one exception.

My wife will not use Linux. After three months trying to convince her to make the switch to Linux, I finally gave up and bought her a Windows Laptop.

But maybe that will all change when I get my mini mac. Apple might do a lot of things wrong, but one thing they do right is design easy to use software for the average home user. I plan on putting a little Velcro on the bottom and mounting the little thing on top of my Linux PC, installing a KVM switch to switch between my Linux box and the mini mac, and hopefully, within a few short weeks, my wife and my stepson will forget all about that nasty Windows laptop (keeping that thing running takes up way too much of my time).

It's not the perfect solution, but it is a step in the right direction. And $500 is a small price for me to pay.

36. I had my wife run Linux too.
She liked it a lot better than Windows but it was such a pain for her because any time she wanted to add a printer or software or anything she needed me to configure it. She hates feeling like she is dependent on me for stuff.

I then bought her a Mac and she loves it, she does everything by herself and I never here her complain about it, with Windows she complained all the time, same with Linux she is just not very technical so she needs something that is completely easy to use and works the first time.

Matter of fact after I bought her, her Mac I fell in love with it also and bought a 12" iBook for myself to take on jobs with me. No more lugging around a heavy piece of crap Dell laptop.

Of course, I'll avoid my usual rant about the idiocy of the stockholder concept... for that far transcends Apple and for once I refuse to go off on a tangent.

But I will add:

18. Agree
I agree Apple makes a superior product and this mini is going to be a huge hit to the entry level crowd. My business is in PC repair and the number one problem I see is viruses and spyware that infect Windows platform PCs.

As soon as consumers realize that these problems are non-existant on the apple platform you will see a migration, also there is the ease of use, I can drop an iBook in front of any of my customers, provide no instructions and they can be using it in minutes with ease.

iPod is leading the was for Apple, people love them because of their ease of use which are opening a lot of eyes to apple for the first time.

I have used PCs for a long time but my last two computers have been Macs, I also recommend Macs to all of my customers who are looking for a new personal computer.

Look, I won't split hairs here about Apple being another corporation... obviously they are. But they do support the Democratic party, their computers are fucking sweet, and Final Cut Pro is the greatest gift to an aspiring filmmaker this century. Why not focus our energy more on evil corporate empires like Wal-Mart or Lockheed Martin?

26. Thank you, macs are easier
my once pc only friends are even getting into the idea of owning a mac.

They look better and they work better. ilife is awesome, being able to move seemlessly between different applications is also a plus.

I will have my hubby write to the company about the polluting, but seriously Gore is not a fraud. No one and I mean no one has been as quick to call out Bushco on their Orwellian crap quicker than Gore, he has been making speeches on such for the last 2 years.

I'm sorry that so many here are quick to jump down apple's throat, I love almost everything apple and we have yet to be disappointed with any of our apple products.

Our mac is four years old and the first problem we have had is a bad superdrive, which thanks to a kickass warrenty will cost us zero dollars to replace.

Once you folks get sick of spyware and virses give apple a try.

Once you go mac, you never go back.

Plus Pixar has made the most touching and wonderful movies since their inception, I have yet to even remotely dislike any of them.

27. The eMac seems to be a better bargain, if you are buying an all-new system
Edited on Mon Jan-17-05 02:09 PM by bobweaver
but if you already have a monitor, keyboard and mouse from a PC, and you want to switch over to MacOS, then the mini Mac is exactly the right thing. Apple should have offered it years ago. But the regular eMac or iMac that they offer is a fully integrated system and is a better choice, if you are in the market for a completely new computer system. I bought an eMac last August and I am very happy with it - but a month later they came out with the iMac G5, and of course I was immediately envious and wish I had waited a month!

The software that comes built-in to a new Mac is better than the software that comes with most PCs that you buy. If you have a digital video camera with a Firewire cable, you can plug it directly into your Mac's firewire port, and use the program iMovie which comes with the mac to do basic editing, then use iDVD which comes with the Mac to burn a DVD (if your Mac has a SuperDrive) and use iPhoto and iTunes to add photos and music to the DVD. Or create your own music with GarageBand - also included. Play the DVD on the Mac or pop the DVD out and put it in your standalone DVD player - Apple makes it very easy to do all of these tasks, the programs work together well, it's almost effortless and these programs COME WITH the Mac!!! Does Microsoft offer such a package? Would Microsoft even be capable of creating such a software package? If you want more advanced capabilities you can buy Apple's Final Cut Pro, Final Cut Express or DVD Studio Pro software. No, I don't work for Apple, I have been using Macs and only Macs since 1989.
