Powell: Tsunami may be good for US image..
http://cnn.netscape.cnn.com/ns/news/story.jsp?floc=FF-APO-1104&idq=/ff/story/0001%2F20050104%2F1125399887.htm&sc=1104

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) - Secretary of State Colin Powell said Tuesday the outpouring of American aid and humanitarian help in the region devastated by the tsunami may also help Muslim nations see the United States in a better light.

``What it does in the Muslim world, the rest of the world is giving an opportunity to see American generosity, American values in action,'' Powell said after meeting with Hassan Wirayuda, his Indonesian counterpart.``America is not an anti-Islamic, anti-Muslim nation. America is a diverse society. We respect all religions,'' he said

Powell said he hopes Muslim countries see the wide range of U.S. aid and involvement around the world, of which the disaster relief is only the latest example. U.S. involvement and cooperation ``is in the best interest of those countries and it's in our best interest,'' he said. ``It dries up those pools of dissatisfaction that give rise to terrorist activities,'' Powell added.

Meanwhile, in an interview with Thailand's Independent Television, Powell again rejected criticism of the U.S. response as being slow.
``Who criticized us? It wasn't the countries in the region,'' he said. And, Powell said, he called the foreign ministers of the devastated countries right away and President Bush spoke to heads of government and state within 48 hours.......

Frickin' Ass. I can't wait until these people no longer get press.
Hopefully no one will want to interview them in prison.

The world is just going to hold us in a warm embrace with that slick comment from Powell.

4. Why can't we just do something good
for the sake of doing something good. That would be a much more powerful statement. There is always an "angle" that the U.S. is trying to play. It sickens me.

5. I think Powell is a hypocrite...

who has the blood of innocent Iraqis on his hands, but I am glad he is talking about this and encouraging Americans to donate. They should be encouraging it because it is the right thing, not because it will make us look better, but I think it does more good than harm. We really looked bad when we didn't give much (and still do anyway).

edit: grammar

6. Yes, using charity to improve our image is a real show of generousity
Oh for crying out loud. Generousity is for its own sake. Giving charity in hopes of improving your image is marketting. You can't get much more cold and depraved than marketting.

Why the heck are those that claim to love Jesus so loudly on their side? I just don't get it.

14. Dear Colon Explodus
Understand me well...I did not give to make America look better. I did not give so the Boy Blunder could bask in my concern for other people. I did not give so Chucklenuts could take credit and prop himself up on the kindness of Americans. Kindness your task-master in no way had anything to do with.

America is not one and the same as the resident Malaprop. Much like he doesn't represent us, our good works are not a reflection on him.

How dare you, you insipid sycophant, use the goodwill of Americans to further the crimes of the Bush administration. Don't build your crusade on our compassion.

15. "Tsunami may be good for US image" How dare anybody suggest
Edited on Tue Jan-04-05 04:42 PM by neweurope
that the death of 150 000 people ore more might be good for anybody's image...

And of course he's wrong, too. Absolutely stupid to believe that the US could attack Iraq, derile the UN and whatever else they've done lately and then by reluctantly cashing out less/no more than all other peoples on the globe they'd have an image-up???

But then Mr. Powell who isn't a stupid man at all doesn't really believe this. He's just making another comfortable million or two being an Uncle Tom.
