WHAT WAS THE BEST DOCUMENTARY OF 2004?
I haven't seen all the documentaries made by the Left in the US so my nomination is provisional. While all those I saw were providing an essential service, I think Hijacking Catastrophe by the Media Education Foundation www.mediaed.org was my favorite. It was more substantial than F911 and it cut straight to the core of the Neo-con's agenda to make America a rouge nation with imperial ambitions.

1. Why, F911 OF COURSE!
Although, to go a bit deeper, 911 in Plane Sight was very very good.

3. Tough call -
F 9/11 was excellent, but so were many others, like Control Room, Outfoxed, Supersize Me, etc. (I haven't seen Hijacking Catastrophe)

It's a hard one to call.

You'll love this documentary even as it burns you a new butthole.

In a new series, the Power of Nightmares explores how the idea that we are threatened by a hidden and organised terrorist network is an illusion.

It is a myth that has spread unquestioned through politics, the security services and the international media.

THE POWER OF NIGHTMARES
Three part series
Wednesdays from 20 October
2100 BST on BBC Two

I: Baby It's Cold Outside
II: The Phantom Victory
III: The Shadows In The Cave

At the heart of the story are two groups: the American neo-conservatives and the radical Islamists.

The Power of Nightmares / BBC exposes the American NeoCons
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x2876040 ;)

Solly Mack is right. You'll love it even as it ;)

It's an eye-opener for those who haven't been following the neo-cons.
It's infromative for those who have.

It's a shock to know that the BBC aired it on British TV. It's caused a huge stir because ordinary people are finding out just what's been going on.

There are links to the videos and transcripts availabe too. Watch it. You won't regret it.

Happy New Year :)

12. The best one I saw was about an Afghani woman
who was allowed to go into the city to study photography. The film
followed her travel across the country by all modes of transportation.
It was absolutely beautiful, and put Afghanistan in an honest light. They are a simply beautiful people, despite the dangerous element.

Edited on Fri Dec-31-04 10:58 PM by htuttle
Too many to choose from. F9/11 probably had the most impact.

16.  I agree
I think political documentaries came into their own this year. I loved F911 and when I saw it I thought it could swing the election. But I guess it really didn't have that much impact. Who knows. Maybe there was a backlash.

In a nation of almost 300 million who knows what undercurrents exist that can't be measured.

I bought Fog Of War as an XMas gift for a friend. I was hoping it would shed more light on the insanity of the Iraq invasion. I didn't find that connection. That's why I think Hijacking Catastrophe was better.

31. Hijacking Catastrophe and The Corporation...
are the two best.

Hijacking really laid out the PNAC story in clear terms.

The Corporation got at the base problems of the corporate
state and the sociopathy of "corporate person hood".

Others:

Unconstitutional
The Hunting of the President
F911
Bush's Brain
Fog of War
