Why I LOVE living in Chicago!

Cook does its thing: Votes Democratic in a big way

Republican precinct volunteers knocking on Northwest suburban household doors in late October were growing disheartened.

Voters were angry - with Republicans.

In an area where voters tend to pride themselves on their political independence, Republican foot soldiers were told time and time again by swing voters that they were so turned off by Alan Keyes and Bush's war in Iraq that they weren't considering Republican candidates.

That anger manifested itself in Democrat John Kerry's 18-percentage-point win over President Bush in this area, a stunning turnaround from 1988 when Bush's father won the region with 58 percent of the vote, the last time a Republican presidential candidate won suburban Cook or carried Illinois. Democrat Barack Obama won the U.S. Senate race over Keyes with 74 percent of the vote here.

In places like Thornton and Cicero townships, the Republican dip from 1988 reached almost 30 percentage points. Elsewhere, Kerry won Schaumburg and Wheeling townships (Where I live!!!). The respective Republican vote in those areas was 20 percentage points and 17 percentage points lower than in 1988.

4. I've never met somebody from Chicago...
...I didn't like. We had a lot of people from Chicago going to the University of Oregon a year or two ago and I had a chance to talk with a few of them on my fire crew. I'm not saying that all people from Chicago are intelligent, but everybody I met from Chicago seemed intelligent. However, YOU PEOPLE DRIVE LIKE MARIO ANDRETTI... SLOW DOWN!!!! Is it really necessary for a dump truck to go 85 or 90??? Seriously, I was going 80 to 85 on the expressway when I was going through Chicago and a... DUMP TRUCK passed me. Is that pathetic or what? And I thought I was zippin' along.

9. well, to be fair....
355 is a huge bypass WAY on the western edge of Cook Co. And it is broken up by toll booths. State cops have a field day on 355 writing tickets...

7. After living in south Florida for a while, I thought Chicago was slow.
But the people are the BEST! Urban but not pretentious.

8. hey, ya gotta go fast while ya can!
after all, you're bound to run into traffic at some point! Even on weekends....even at night....even during holidays!!

Yeah, you have to be a bit of a dare devil to drive around here. I love riding my motorcycle, but won't dare go on the expressway with it. I just HATE it when a truck blows by doing 80 and almost knocks me off the bike.

5. Where have you gone, Party of Lincoln?
We now have a 10-9 Democratic House delegation, two Democratic senators, a Democratic governor, a Democratic legislature, and we went Blue for the 4th time in a row this November.

I think the "Party of Lincoln" has lost touch with the Land of Lincoln.
