Will the Fundies go nuts over the Gonzales appointment ?
While AG of Texas he ruled in favor of a case regarding a girl under 18 not having to notify her parents about an abortion.

Will this be a big deal to the fundies ?

I hope so !

4. I Believe They Will
My hunch is they will be upset as he is not a lock-step right-winger.

5. No. Gonzalez will see that anti-abortion Court picks are made.
Edited on Wed Nov-10-04 11:26 PM by David Dunham
He did that as Bush's White House counsel.

6. They REALLY don't like him ...
Edited on Wed Nov-10-04 11:51 PM by Tesibria
I spent my lunch hour - then part of this evening - reading thru the news stories re: Gonzales from 1997 - 2004 (Ok -- there were 2,000 results -- and I only read through the first 1,200).

They really are scared that he's a "closet Souter" -- and they're really aggravated that he won't cowtow to them in meetings, or pass their litmus test.

I'm still not sure WHAT he is -- other than a great Lawyer (in the WORST way) for his client. With Bush as his client, he's taken terrible positions and done terrible things. When he was on the Texas Supreme Court - he was generally good -- he was a ... well ... a "Souter" type justice -- which isn't fantastic, but -- gee, we could do ...er .. we HAVE done .. a lot worse.

There is his record on criminal matters -- quite frightening. But all of that record is as lawyer, not as judge.

...see Al Gonzales - the Cliff Notes for more info and citations to articles re: same.

11. What the Freepers are saying about him .... (SCARY!!!!)

"If you support affirmative discrimination, unimpeded trial lawyers, and abortions for minors, you will love Gonzales. Millions of Americans voted for Bush on social issues and to ensure that the Judiciary is run by people who believe in the Constitution. Between tacit support for Spector and the appointment of Gonzales, Bush has not waited untill all the votes are counted in the election before betraying his socially-conservative and Constitutionalist base."

"1. Supporting affirmative discrimination crosses a line in the sand for conservatives. It is bad politics and worse policy. It is a racial spoils system and an attack on the nation.
2. Gonzales screws conservatives whenever he has leeway. He torpedoed a Surpeme Court case. What will he do as AG?
3. Gonzales is bad on abortion, the death penalty, and affirmative action."

"Conservatives must oppose Gonzales."

"I'm a whiner - if Bush betrays me by putting a pro-choice individual into office (Supreme Ct. or Attorney General), I'm going to be very angry with him!"

... but then there is "The pr buzz on him from the administration earlier today on cable tv (failed to observe which station) sounded like he is being given credit as the father of the Patriot Act and the mover and shaker behind the successful (so far) efforts to dump the archaic Geneva Convention when it comes to getting info asap from tango scumbags. It seems to me that we are in for a rough ride regarding citizen rights from the whiners and that a tough AG who will fall on his sword to keep the majority of us safe at home, even one with flies on him, is preferable to a milktoast type who mouths the convervative line. Would I like to have everything wrapped up in one person? Yes. Would I settle for a ball buster when it comes to our putting our safety ahead of the ACLU? Damn straight."

...and "He's OK as AG but for SCOTUS we can do better. Miguel Estrada and Ted Olsen come immediately to mind."

FROM: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1276895/posts

"arrghh!!! Did he get a note from his mom? Geez..not feeling very good out of the blocks... I want Ted Olsen on the big court then Ill relax..Bad pick imho."

"But this is not a bad pick. He's been a good counsel. This also indicates that Bush would not nominate him for USSC, which gets the fear of that out of the way ... Bush will be nominating standout picks for the USSC IMHO."

"It's OK with me. I would be strongly opposed to a SCOTUS appointment for him, but AG is just fine, if that's what the President wants."

FROM: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1276418/posts

"Bummer. Bad decision by the White House. Gonzales sighned off on the so-called "torture memos" and the confirmation hearings are going to be horrible. I'm sure fat Ted Kennedy is sharpening the knives already. Gonzales also did a lousy job managing the judicial nominations that the democrats torpedoed. I don't understand the blind loyalty the President has to this man. What was wrong with Larry Thompson or Marc Racicot?"

"This is better than his being named to SCOTUS, in my view. I was nervous about him being nominated for the court, since I have heard mixed messages about his views."

"W's taking the long view, and looking at the effect a fight against Gonzales will have on the demonRATs. The spectacle of the demonRATs trashing a Hispanic, following their fight against Clarence Thomas in the 80's, together with the level of black and Hispanic representation in the Cabinet will continue to take a toll on the demonRATs ability to count on reflexive minority support of their socialist programs. "

"Be pleased, though. This will likely put an end to any Supreme Court hopes for Al Gonzales Souter. I'll take him as AG over the SCOTUS anyday. He gets a promotion for good work, and we get Miguel Estrada nominated instead."

FROM: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1276991/posts

"If you doubt this all you have to know is that Charles Schumer is for him being AG.

Bush seems to be spending "capital" that was not earned. Very few if any conservatives wanted him to legitimize millions of ILLEGAL aliens. And very few conservatives wanted Bush to appoint someone like Alberto Gonzales to AG when is is PRO-AFFIRMATIVE ACTION and PRO-ABORTION. Are our men and women fighting and dieing in the war on terror so their brothers, sisters and children and they themselves can be discriminated against because they are white??? It's hard for most of the people even on this website to see clearly in the wake of the big win last week. But Bush seems to be heading striaght to the center and tossing all of us right wingers overboard after we knocked ourselves out helping him get re-elected."

"No you can't. But the smile I had on my face last week has turned into a frown. It's too bad Bush doesn't care about those of us who supported him. It's okay with him if our kids are discriminated against when they go to enroll in college, or when we compete for jobs and/or promotions. His family is already set for life. Just like those loser liberals in hollywood. It's easy to be pro-afirmative action when you aren't fighting to get ahead."

"DOJ lawyers file briefs either for or against various issues when they make it to federal court. the AG gives them direction.
The AG also gives legal advise to the President. It's very disappointing."

"Fred Barnes on Brit's Fox All Stars today said that some conservatives were relieved that Bush had selected Gonzalez for Attorney General, since that meant he wouldn't be nominated to the Supreme Court."

8. from fundie to jackboot
Gonzales Upside:
Less extreme on the abortion issue
not the fucking lunatic that Asscroft is

Downside:
He drafted the justifications for treatment of detainees in the "war on terror"

on the whole, i think this is a push
on the whole, i'd rather be in philadelphia

9. My idea for the Dem's is to trash him and pass him.
I don't mean they should vote for him but not filibuster. Make him look as flawed as possible then make the Gopers pass him on a party line vote. This will make us look non-obstructionist, but ruin him as a Supreme Court nominee.

10. gosh, what a moral dilemna for the fundies!!
Hm, on the one hand, the guy's great -- he advocates torture and makes damn good and sure none of our boys can be tried at the hague for war crimes!

On the other hand -- he might let an underage pregnant incest victim get an abortion without telling the father who got her pregnant.

DAMN! I hate these moral quandries!
