Julia Stimson Thorne (born September 16, 1944) is the author of You Are Not Alone: Words of Experience and Hope for the Journey Through Depression (1993) (with Larry Rothstein) (ISBN 0060969776) and A Change of Heart: Words of Experience and Hope for the Journey Through Divorce (1996) (ISBN 0060951052).

She was once married to John Kerry, the 2004 Democratic presidential nominee. Thorne and Kerry were married on May 23, 1970 and divorced July 25, 1988, after a separation of many years. They have two children together, Alexandra Kerry (born 1973) and Vanessa Kerry (born 1976).

When the couple met, Thorne was Kerry's best friend's sister.

On May 7, 1997, two years after his remarriage, Kerry publicly announced that he had requested an annulment from the Roman Catholic Church of his marriage to Thorne. Thorne vigorously opposed the annulment, but it was granted.

Thorne has remarried and lives in Montana. She has endorsed Kerry's campaign, stating, "I think he is an immensely talented statesman, and I am 100 percent behind him." She has, however, expressed concern about protecting her privacy, and hopes that the couple's daughters will not become too involved in public life.

9. Confirmation from Another Source
'We stayed on this issue until we learned that Kerry did, in fact, receive an annulment. Had Kerry been forthright about the subject, all the speculation could have been avoided.'

That's from the May '04 issue of Catalyst, the Catholic League's magazine.

8. Julia Thorne
He met her through his friend, her brother. The brother and he are friends to this day, still quite close. Julia had problems with severe depression. She didn't want to be a politician's wife any more, so she asked for a divorce. She got some mental health help, moved out west somewhere, and remarried. She wrote a book about her battle with depression--sort of biography with self help thrown in.

She is very private, and has told the press she isn't playing.
