Yesterday, my mother came up from New York City for Parents Weekend at my college. She arrived in the middle of a blustery day, all wrapped up in scarves and a heavy jacket. I hugged my mother, took her inexplicably heavy book bag, and gave her a tour of the Smith College museum.
I wanted to take her to the tea party that was being hosted by the Smith College Democrats and the Smith College Republicans, and she happily agreed to go with me. When we got to the tea party, I noticed that the room was pretty full, and that the line for the tea/coffee/cookies was rather long. I waited in line with my mother, managed to snap a few cookies, and got some coffee.
We sat down at a table with another woman that was there with her husband. I took a cursory look around the room. The Smith College Democrats table had plenty of parents taking buttons, stickers, and yard signs from there. Pretty soon, the only buttons available were "Students For Kerry" buttons, and one mother said, "I don't care if this is a student button because it's a Kerry button!"
In a stark contrast to the Dems table, the Smith Republicans table didn't attract plenty of parents, and most buttons featuring an elephant were untaken. While I had been looking around the room, my mother was talking to the harried-looking woman at the table. The woman mentioned that she was the mother of the Smith College Republicans. Upon hearing this, I brought my mother a sticker, and donkey patterned napkins.
The woman said, "I'm rich so I'm voting for Bush." She didn't say this in a joking way, and my mother looked at her in incredulity. My mother grinned and said, "I'm middle class and I know where my priorities are and that's voting for Kerry." Woohoo! My mother rocked, and I couldn't stop smiling at her. The woman pursed her lips, and started talking to her husband, effectively ignoring us.
