It's 2004 and instead of taking us into the future, this president's gaze is firmly, resolutely fixed on the past..
He told us that the "Maternity" homes of the unenlightened 30's,40's,50's & 60's were perfectly acceptable. The blackmarket baby selling and the shame heaped on then-teenaged girls lingers even now, as many senior citizens go to their graves, never knowing "what happened" to that baby they were forced to part with all those years ago.
Republicans have an inordinant fixation on women (and their private parts). Hardly a Bush speech is without a reference to OB/GYNs, abortion, "family values" (codespeak for barefoot, pregnant, and in front of a stove), or some vague reference to "loving them"..
He told us that he would not restore slavery through supreme court appointments (Wow..that's magnanimous, of ya, George). For a 21st Century man, to reach back to 1857 to find a supreme court ruling, struck me as odd, to say the least. Certainly there have been rulings in the intervening years that would have been more appropriate for him to reference.
Both of these "choices" have something in common. White men were in control. Dad said "Send that little tramp away until her bastard child is "dealt with"...and White men bossed black people around in the times surrounding the Dred Scott case.. In fact the two eras, and all the time inbetween and before were controlled by white , land-owning men.
Perhaps the next stop for the Time Machine is the 1700's.. Did you know that outsourcing was happening then too??
In March of 1770.... British soldiers worked cheap, taking jobs from colonials....Colonials provoked soldiers...Killing of colonials outraged colonies....leading to rebellion And a guy named Hobbs suggested that we needed absolute leader to force people to be civilized..
Next stop... The Huns..Visigoths...Mongol Hordes...
