When Bush says "You voted for the war in Iraq", why doesn't Kerry reply:
"Yes, I voted for the war in Iraq, because I trusted you, I trusted your intelligence, I put my faith in you, because it was important to stand behind you, as president in those hard and trying times. But today, we all know you lied. You lied to your fellow americans, you lied to the world, you lied to our country, and you lied to me."

1. Kerry didn't vote for the war and he has said exactly that
on more then one occasion. There was no vote as to whether or not we should go to war.

10. Best line: "We voted to give him a drivers license. Not permission to ....
drive the car off the cliff."

That line is from a fellow DUer. It's great because it does 2 things. It explains what the vote was for...... authorization. Not, "You must go to war but you're authorized.........."

Also, it explains what AWOL/moron did with the authorization. He drove the car off the cliff.

Additionally, the press would love it and it'd be run over and over and there isn't any real counter to it. The Kerry campaign and all supports should pound this line home all day long.

5. Didn't Bush say the vote was to "keep the peace"?
Didn't he also say that war wasn't imminent?

6. Kerry didn't vote for the war! That wasn't even what the vote was for!
The vote was to give the President the authority to use force, as a final resort, and to give him that bargaining position when he went to the UN. The authorization hinged on the President's promise to use ALL other options and use force as the LAST and unavoidable option.

Kerry has stated this many times, and has also reminded everyone that the President did NOT keep his word.

7. Because thier strategy is not to debate thier record.
Edited on Wed Oct-06-04 11:42 AM by K-W
Kerry presents his clear consistant stance on Iraq and then moves immediately to critisizing Bush.

He doesnt want to get bogged down in arguing whether or not the IWR was or was not a vote for this war.

And trying to do that would sound weasely, even if it isnt actually weaseling.

8. what needs to be said
is that no one voted for a war! The issue was to authorize this administration to use military force if necessary. See here http://www.yourcongress.com/ViewArticle.asp?article_id=2686

This administration disregarded the section concerning the U N and proceeded to invade. What many voted for in the Senate and the House is not what the * administration did.

9. He voted to give Shrub the AUTHORITY to go to war.
He did not want to handcuff the president. He trusted that the president would send troops as a last resort.

That is what I get from that vote.

He voted to give the president the AUTHORITY to go to war. Key word being, AUTHORITY.

12. Whatever the case, this is a GREAT line and he SHOULD use it.
Because I TRUSTED YOU. I Trusted My President. I put my faith in your word, and you LIED TO ME. YOU LIED TO AMERICA. YOU LIED TO THE MOTHERS AND FATHERS AND WIVES AND HUSBANDS WHO SENT THEIR LOVED ONES OFF TO WAR, and to about 1050 NEEDLESS DEATHS and THOUSANDS OF HORRIBLE PERMANENT INJURIES. YOU LIED TO ME, Mr. bush. YOU LIED TO OUR COUNTRY. YOU LIED TO OUR TROOPS. YOU LIED TO THE WHOLE WORLD.

Sorry to yell. But that's exactly what Kerry should be doing.
